NO: There's no substitute for Prednisone and yes, weight gain is a known side effect.  The side effects are dose related. Your doctor can help you taper to the smallest effective dose and that may help.  Good luck!

Sarcoidosis help: Wow!  you are so kind.  Many patients with sarcoidosis have fatigue, 
muscle pain, joint pain, sweats, skin problems, possible breathing
problems, sinus problems, irregular heart beats.  Some patients don't have any symptoms!  but if your relative has some of the many
problems with sarcoid; be supportive, actively listen, help with children, housework, getting to medical appts, --just ask.

Quite variable: In caucasions most people recover with or without treatment (90%). In blacks and asians the disease tends to be more severe and resistant to treatment. Most patients do well with steroids; some require more immunosuppressive therapy which has more risk. Some require no treatment at all. As a specialist i tend to see the worst patients which sometimes colors my expectations.

40 % gamble: You probably heard that around 60% of sarcoid cases will resolve without  treatment.
There are many forms of sarcoid, some very serious.  Work with a medical professional in making your decision.

Not clear: Sarcoid is a multiorgan granulomatous condition which is thought to be caused in part by genetic predisposition and environmental exposure. Numerous causes have been postulated but are difficult to prove.

: There is a slightly high risk with family history but we do not have an exact number. If you are black, the risk will be 3-4 times higher.

Sarcoidosis: Non-cardiac sarcoidosis doesn't cause cardiomyopathy. But if you have cardiac sarcoidosis it could manifest as cardiomyopathy. It is a kind of infiltrative cardiac disease.
