Variable : Most cases of elbow bursitis can be resolved with eliminating activities or positions that aggravate the bursa and reducing the inflammation (rest, ice, compression, elevation). Other more severe cases may require physical therapy, aspiration or steroid injection. Rarely is surgery required.

Surgery?: Recommend conservative treatment with steroid injection, possible platelet rich plasma injection if an acute injury. Is diagnosis from mri? If so than more likely a surgical issue if from acute traumatic injury rather than from repetitive overuse.

See details: You did not rupture anything. You simply bled into the bursa as a result of trauma. Give it time to heal. Continue with RICE.

Bursitis elbow: I assume you are talking about the bursa over the elbow which originally had fluid in it.

After the hockey game it sounds like the bursa sac ruptured. This would give pain and inflammation. If the elbow moves well and the patient can do a push-up easily, the bursa  simply released the fluid after trauma and the symptoms should go away quickly.. x-ray if the pain will not allow a push-up

This : This can usually heal itself.  It is important to be sure there is no other elbow injury such as a fracture.  A risk is infection, and if the area became red, swollen, or the patient has a fever then they should be seen immediately.

Begin with rest: Begin with rest and activity modificaiton.  Do not pull or lift things with your elbows locked out.  Antiinflammatories can help, if you dont see an improvement with conservative measures sometimes surgery is indicated.

Reduction: The elbow needs to be reduced (set in place) and then assessed for bone and ligament damage that may have occurred with the dislocation.

Splint: Sometimes for moderate to severe pain i treat with a steroid injection. However the most important treatment is wearing a forearm splint daily for 3 months. Even when it feels better wear it  for 3 months, or  the  pain often comes back.  I use the band-it splint; can get on line. Voltaren (diclofenac) 1% gel and occupational therapy can also be helpful.
