Hammer toe surgery: I see my patients in 6-9 days after surgery. If they have any concerns they come in earlier.  Some doctors will see their patients at some point longer that a week. If you have concerns ask your doctor about them.

After: You probably already had xrays when the pins were placed.

Need to see doc: Excessive swelling 3 months post op is concerning. See your surgeon for evaluation to make sure there is no concern for infection, etc.

how long should you leave the pins in the toes after hammertoe surgery? can they stay in permanently? (all five toes)?

Accepted Answer

: Pins for correction of hammer toe are usually (always) out side of the digits for easier removal in 4-6 weeks. If the wires are buried ( beneath the skin) and are left in the digits I feel is only a time when they will need to be removed. This is called a K- wire. I am not aware of any new technology that allows for the metal to stay in the foot. Any foreign object should be avoided.

Not related: Hammertoe surgery typically avoids the toenail area.  There may be a problem with the nail itself.

i had hammertoe surgery 8 wks ago, 2nd, 3rd ,4th toe.  pins out at 4 wks.  when can i expect to walk comfortable without pain? still very painful.

Outdated : pins to hammer toes is an outdated technique. Why did you have that. It take long time to heal with pins vs implant ie stayfuse implant.  Usually 6 weeks non weight bearing with pins. And 3 weeks non weight bearing with implant

how do i get rid of post inflammatory hyperpigmentation? i had hammertoe surgery and my toe is really dark?

: How long has it been since the surgery? Healing can continue for quite some time, even months later. You may want to see a dermatologist to determine the best way to treat the hyperpigmentation if your surgeon thinks the hyperpigmentation is not going to improve any further. Good luck!

Homework.: There are several ways to go depending on your specific post-operative condition. Bone grafting, small digital implants or spacers, just to mention a few. You should be aware that the chances of having a normal functioning toe are limited at best. Having multiple opinions is definitely the way to be informed before you commit.

had bunion/hammertoe surgery 6 weeks ago. 5 wires inside foot. foot is still red, swollen, and painful. not getting better. incision on top of foot(4th toe) is festering ulcer. getting desperate. not convinced surgeon is being honest. any ideas?

: Go to the emergency room. You could have an infection that needs immediate attention. Your foot should not be like that 5 weeks post op.

if i were to have tenotomy surgery for the repair of hammertoes, would i be able to resume rigorous physical activity, such as running?

Sure...: You will have to give things a time to heal, but you should be able to resume your normal routine over time.
