7wk postsurgery for torn rotator cuff, nerve impingement, bone spur ground off&labrum repaired. my thumb,hand,forearm are swollen.have burning nerve pain.hurts bad to move wrist wrong. in pt. been icing and heating. how can i reduce swelling&pain?

PT or surgery: Long head of the biceps tendonitis and rotator cuff pain often occur together. Steroid injections can make the symptoms less but rarely cure the problem which is usually treated with physical therapy 2-3x/week for several months. If improvement is not acheived  often arthroscopic surgery is necessary

Nerve or muscle?: Rotator cuff problems include, inflammation, pressure, weakness, or damage to the tendons that constitute the rotator cuff.  Conservative care w/anti-inflammatories, ice, and physical therapy.  Sometimes surgery is necessary to repair a torn tendon or release pressure on the tendon.  Surgery can also be helpful to release pressure on pinched nerves that supply cuff. An orthopaedic surgeon can help.

rotator cuff: Best to be evaluated by an orthopedist, and likely imaged with mri.  However, generally a rotator cuff tear will hurt in the shoulder and have weakness and pain with shoulder range of motion.  Pinched nerve (usually in the neck) causes pain more in the shoulder blade area and radiates down the arm with associated numbness, tingling, or burning.

how long will it take to recover from the pinched nerve surgery on my arm, or could it be a torn rotator cuff?

Hard to say: Recovery from a compressive neuropathy can take several months to a year to completely recover depending how much damage to the nerve was caused and the recovery my be incomplete in some cases. You could potentially have a rotator cuff tear also, you might need an MRI or ultrasound. Surgery to decompress a nerve should have some immediate relief, but certainly not complete relief.

Can't answer w/o inf: The space here is limited to provide a good answer to your question. You should speak to an Orthopedic Surgeon or sports medicine doctor (rehab?) to answer this question. Generally, rest, ice, &amp; compression is used to help support healing. Anti-inflammatories like Tylenol (acetaminophen) could be used also. Later on, rehab is used when healing has started but timing is up to the surgeon.

Rotator Cuff: In most cases it's very difficult to tell the difference between the two, however significant loss of function (i.e. Strength) is one good way to determine if the cuff  is torn rather than just pinched. Even then, advanced imaging such as MRI may be required and in some cases a steroid injection may help your doctor determine the difference. Best of luck!

RC: Impingement implies a pinching of the rotator cuff generally underneath the bone called the acromion. This is often associated with either a bone spur or a curved acromion. This can in some situations lead to a tear of the rotator cuff. Rotator cuff tears imply an actual rip in one or more of the tendons. Most often the tear is from the attachment site of the tendon to the bone.

Rotator cuff: Rotator Cuff tears can occur traumatically or sometimes be degenerative depending on the age of the patient. Smaller partial thickness tears can sometimes be treated with therapy, injections,and NSAIDS.
