No, it doesn't: Rooibos tea is made from a different plant (aspalathus linearis -- a broom like member of the legume family) than regular tea (camellia sinensis).  Theanine, is found in camellia sinensis -- from which green tea and others are made -- and certain mushrooms.  Though it doesn't contain l-theanine, rooibos does contain other healthy polyphenols, flavonols, and antioxidants.  And it tastes good too.

Beneficial for you: Rooibos tea is considered one of the healthiest and safest teas to consume during pregnancy. Ginger is commonly used to treat morning sickness and is safe in the amounts in tea. Cinnamon in high doses may induce premature labor but the amounts to flavor tea are safe, and cloves are also safe in moderation. High doses of ginger, cinnamon or cloves might be hazardous but the amounts in tea are safe.

my son refuses to drink his milk bottle. he drinks about 4 bottles of rooibos tea a day. are there any bad effects? and what should i give him instead? he is 14 months.

Possibly: If he gets all his fluid needs from the tea he may have no thirst/reason to take a bottle. He should not be on a bottle at that age anyway all his fluids should come from a cup. If his diet otherwise provides a calcium source (main benefit of milk) he may be okay. I would cut back on the tea &amp; offer water or milk. The water is so bland he may accept the milk.

: People who take warfarin, a blood thinning medication, should not drink green tea. Since green tea contains vitamin K, it can make warfarin ineffective. Meanwhile, you should not mix green tea and aspirin because they both prevent platelets from clotting. No interactions were found between red bush tea and warfarin. This does not necessarily mean no interactions exist. Always consult your doctor.

hi dr, my 1 y old baby daughter vomited after waking up this morning at +-11am. she then again vomited after 1/2hour after she woke up. we tried to give her rooibos tea, she refused, gave her her milk but it came out again. i'm concerned, please help?

Infant clear liquids: Avoid tea, and use pedialyte solution  and water  instead, to keep her well hydrated. Sips initially and then advance as tolerated. If she seems listless, has a fever, or dry diapers, please see urgent care or your pediatrician.

It shouldnt: Rooibos tea is actually even used by some as a very weak muscle relaxant. However, that being said, if you do notice pain in muscles after every time you drink it, i would try to avoid it. You may have an unusual sensitivity to it (not a true allergy), but again, this is very unlikely. Hope that helps!

Doctor can check: Some foods or drinks can have chemicals or particles that irritate the oral mucosa (tissue surfaces inside the mouth). Unripe fruits are more likely to cause such problems. One can make an appointment with her primary care doctor for an exam, and bring a banana and Rooibos tea. After an exam, one can eat the banana and drink the tea... and then have the doctor examine again to look for any change.

my five year old son has been complaining about an itchy back for months.  lotions, oil, even rooibos tea seem to help in the short term. no allergies?

Itchy back: If he has dry skin then he may have eczema which means you have to moisturize the skin regularly in order to control dryness and itchyness and flare ups of rash. He also may get itchy back from sweating, and the effects of artificial fabrics or wool clothing-try to but plain cotton shirts and rinse out detergents well. I wouldn't necessarily attribute allergies as a cause unless he has hives.

my son who will be 11 months in two weeks was exclusively breastfed i have now managed to wean him and he seems to be taking it well, however he refuses formula. he drinks rooibos tea and water at night. will this pose any danger?

Infant feeding: Feeding recommendations for infants suggest using breastfeeding or formula to one year, then transitioning to milk. Since he refuses formula, you should offer him milk. He should be eating 3 meals and 2 snacks with the milk offered in a sippy cup after the food. The Rooibos tea is fine as it is non caffeinated and a good source or copper, fluoride and polyphenols.
