Tourette: If symptoms interfere with functioning, tx is by medications to suppress the tics, such as Haldol (haloperidol) & Orap (pimozide), alpha-adrenergic agonists such as Clonidine or guanfacine,  Luvox for associated OCD symptoms if present, psychotherapy & behavior modification for teaching response training.

Multifactorial: Although clearly a genetic disorder, the mode of inheritence for tourette's is complex, involving multiple defective genes, and perhaps even an interplay of genetic and environmental factors. There is also clearly a genetic association between the triad of tourette's, ocd, and adhd, and i generally screen patients i diagnose with tourette's for concurrent adhd and/or ocd.

Tourette Syndrome is: a neurological disorder characted by repetitive, stereotypic, involuntary motor movements &amp; sounds called  motor &amp; vocal tics that have lasted at least a year without more than a 2-month period without tics. It is often associated with ADHD &amp; OCD. It usually starts in childhood &amp; is 3-4 times more common in boys than girls. Tics may peak before puberty &amp; abate in adolescence or young adulthood.

Dads and Moms can: The causative gene has not been identified. Male:female ratio is 4:1; however, partial penetrance can occur in females. Therefore, a maternal family history of anxiety disorders, especially ocd, sometimes with adhd may be the only clues. Language-based learning disorders, habit disorders like nail-biting, skin-picking, hair-twirling, mood disorders & autistic disorder may co-occur.

It's best if you,  your family, primary care provider, neurologist, psychiatrist, psychologist &amp; medical social worker can work together to manage your tics &amp;, if present, ADHD &amp; Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. Medications, individual &amp; family therapy  &amp;, if needed, ADA accomodations at work will all help.
