One interesting finding is that in families with a heavy occurrence of Tourette's Disorder is that males often are more likely to have Tourette's and females often have OCD. ADHD is quite common with Tourette's.

How is tourette's inherited?

Multifactorial: Although clearly a genetic disorder, the mode of inheritence for tourette's is complex, involving multiple defective genes, and perhaps even an interplay of genetic and environmental factors. There is also clearly a genetic association between the triad of tourette's, ocd, and adhd, and i generally screen patients i diagnose with tourette's for concurrent adhd and/or ocd.

Tourette: Most cases are mild & require no medications, can benefit from reassurance & psychobehavioral therapy (cognitive therapy, biofeedback) & education. Medications that are helpful for tics are; clonidine, orap, (pimozide) tenex, and other medications that treat comorbid conditions such as OCD & adhd.
