hi, should a 6 mm lung nodule be taken seriously? 3 lung nodules were located 6 months ago 1 x 6mm ( right lung ) 2 x 5mm ( left lung),  my gp is not so bothered ,, should this be taken more seriously ? if not cancer why do lung nodules appear?

: It depends on your risk factors and more details are needed to answer this. Are you a smoker? If you are a smoker then the CT scan may need to be repeated in 3-6 months.  Your doctor can see the whole picture, so ask him or her.

Resection: You should see pulmonary surgeon to remove the mass, or biopsy to find the cause so be treated.

Get it TNM staged.: If there is a lung nodule, and it appears solitary, it still needs to be evaluated to see if there is no metastasis, etc..  Ct scan and an ENT (ears, nose, and throat) exam are done.  The ct helps determine if there is lymph node involvement.  An aspiration biopsy of the lesion can be taken to determine its histology.  Surgical resection in localized cases is done for all types except small cell.

Leave to your doc: This is not a very large mass and the CT in another 3 months will likely help guide the steps to be followed.  I suggest that you stop worrying and let your doctor guide you through the evaluation. Something would have been done if your doctor had strongly suspected cancer being the cause.

my ct discovered 6 lung nodules from .2 - .8 cm.  .8 node is calcified, others are not.  discoid atelectasis in the upper right lung.  concerning?

To,observe: Likely benign post inflammatory granulomas and will calcify over time.
Regular cts for a few years will establish this.

. Prior exposure ? Histoplasmosis , farming, digging etc 
do not be a smoker!

Unknowable: There are a lot of possibilities. It is a density in the lung identified on an x-ray or ct

for a small nodule ct scan follow up at 3-4 months early on can document any growth or change.
If enlarging-remove.
If calcifying it is likely benign and needs nothing done.
In the midwest histoplasmosis can be the cause of single or multiple such findings.

Big enough: A 13 mm lung nodule warrants a pet/ct scan. This will identify things like calcifications seen in benign nodules and will determine if sugar uptake is high as seen in infection or tumor or low indicating scar. Depending on the likelihood of cancer, a ct guided biopsy is possible in most peripheral nodules greater than 9mm. Lung cancer is increasing in nonsmokers, women and the young in u. S.
