what does it mean when you have to get the rhogam shot while pregnant? my blood type is a- &' my obgyn said i had to get it. is there something wrong

Prevent Antibodies: "a negative" means that your body hasn't been exposed to a factor called "rh." your baby could have that factor though and if so, your body will think of that factor as foreign and create antibodies that will attack your next pregnancy if it also has that factor. Rhogam prevents these antibodies from forming by binding to the factor, hiding them, and ensuring your body doesn't create antibodies.

doctor wont give me rhogam shot at 37 weeks pregnant? i forgot to mention and he just ordered bloodwork to see if im sensitized. had blood drawn today to see, im worried as this is second pregnancy. im a- hubby type unknown. is it too late to get?

: Not necessarily. What was the blood type of the first baby/father of first baby. It is imperative to ascertain your antibody status before giving Rhogam.

Yes: Rhogam is given tio rh neg mothers to protect an rh pos bby. If you are rh neg, you should have received Rhogam after your miscarriages.

Rhogam: if you are Rh Negative, then rhogam is indicated by 2nd trimester to decrease the risk of inducing red blood cells break down (hemolysis) in the fetus. Close follow up with maternal fetal medicine (high risk pregnancy) specialist will be needed.

Depends: If the first baby was rh negative you did not need rhogram  and there will be no problem with a future pregnancy. If the baby was positive you could form antibodies to a future baby which can destroy  that babies red blood cells and harm or kill a future baby. Check with your OB and see . Most likely you did not get Rhogam  because the first baby was rh negative.

i don't think i got my rhogam shot after last delivery of 3rd child (did w previous 2 births). now pregnant again. will i miscarry baby?!

Unlikely: If you miscarry, it is likely not related to the Rh problem.  Usually the first pregnancy after a missed Rhogam results in fairly mildly hemolytic disease, but subsequent pregnancies have increased likelihood of hydrops.  Be sure your OB is aware of your situation, and your baby will be monitored carefully.  Your baby may need phototherapy or exchange transfusion after birth.

Usually no change: There is usually no change in the recommended Rhogam schedules for subsequent pregnancies unless something very specific to your case. Talk over with you OB to determine perfect timing for thi one.

Not likely: You should get the Rhogam shot at 28 weeks of pregnancy and just after delivery.  Additionally, if there is any bleeding during pregnancy, or a miscarriage, you should be treated at that time.  
If you are concerned about your blood type affecting future pregnancies, a blood test called "Antibody Screen" would be helpful.

im 30 weeks pregnant can i get my rhogam shot if im sick?

Probably: The immune response/protection provided by the shot is not likely to be affected by minor illness. You can contact the offices of the treating providers before you go in &amp; discuss it to be sure.
