i have successfully taken rhinocort aqua for years and was give budesidine by walgreens as a generic instead. is it exactly the same?  could there be differences in side effects?

Generic drugs: Generic medications by FDA standards have to meet the same dosage of active ingredient as the Brand Name drug.  There should no side effect differences between the two medications (as they are usually caused by the active ingredient)  Good Luck

rhinocort aqua nasal spray, side effects?

Accepted Answer

Mild typically: Like any nasal cortisone spray, nose bleeds are the most common side effect but these can be limited by proper nasal spray technique.  Also, run-off down back of throat can lead to cough and sore throat.  At usual doses, the other side effects listed for steroids are very, very uncommon.  An allergist or ENT physician can assist in treatment recommendations.

Considered safe: It is a category b drug: no harm seen in animal studies, no available data in human first trimester, and no evidence of fetal harm in 2nd or 3rd. If your allergic symptoms are intolerable then rhinocort is a good nasal steroid to use. Sometimes trying nasal saline rinses and washes ie:nettie pot is enough to provide relief that you may not need the rhinocort. Speak with your allergist re: options.

will aiming rhinocort aqua away from the perforation in my nasal septum reduce the likelihood of complications?

Yes: Nasal septal perforations are a problem. They crust and bleed easily. Unfortunately using a nasal spray can sometimes aggravate the situation even though you angle the spray away from the perforation. You might be better to try to get the perforation fixed.  If the perforation is small fixing it is relatively easy. Seek an experienced  ENT physician who will be able to advise you in more detail.

Generic flonase: Nasal steroids are a great first choice for medication treatment of allergies.  Your insurance will likely want you on a generic if possible.  There is a generic option for Flonase and this to some degree for a number of patients.

Nasal sprays: They are both nasal steroids and serve similar functions to treat nasal allergies and congetion. Rhinocort is ok for pregnant women but not fluticasone.

Reason for concern: You need to be careful. Your concerns are valid. Consider saline nasal wash.

can i take clarinase, rhinocort aqua as nose spray and zovirax (acyclovir) cream all together?

Accepted Answer

Yes: But would advise against use of topical Acyclovir (zovirax). It will not shorten the herpetic outbreak or minimize your symptoms.  The value is that it reduces viral shedding and therefore transmissability to others, but at the cost of potentially inducing resistance so that if and when you need systemic therapy it will be less effective.

any oral medication that works similarly to rhinocort aqua?

Steroids: Unfortunately there is no good long term oral mediation that works like rhinocort. It is very dangerous to take oral steroids, especially for a prolonged period of time.
