do i need surgery?

Not for the cyst: All results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Solitary renal cysts are not uncommon.

That describes: normal features of the kidney.  The echogenicity is the "brightness" on US, and the cortical thickness is the width of the renal tissue.

Hmmm: Thats sounds very wishy washy.  You either have normal echogenicity or increased encgencity.  You should ask your nephrologist if you have one.  

You definitely dont want to have a possible renal mass.  You might need more imaging.  Most renal imaging needs contrast - as your radiologist

When: Applied to the kidneys this means the outer area of the kidney is brighter on ultrasound than what is usually seen. This can be technical (as in not a reflection of disease). Increased echogenicity is also seen in a host of medical kidney diseases. So the importance of the finding has to be correlated by your doctor.

Accepted Answer

Likely inflammation: Increased echogenicity  of a tissue, usually indicates inflammation.  It does not indicate why its there but its likely there.  Given that the echogenicity is bilateral, tumors are not likely.  The most common cause of such inflammation is a urinary tract infection.  Consult your PCP for consideration of a Urology referral if you have other symptoms that are problematic.

Kidney?: If this was an ultrasound of your abdomen, and the report is referring to your kidneys, then the result indicates an enhanced thickening of the outer layers of your kidney, Best to discuss with your doctor who knows your history and why you had the test.

Probably small stone: The description may represent small (asymptomatic) renal calculi (stones)

Your Doctor: Interpretation of tests, whether radiological, blood tests or procedures . Interpretation is best done within the context of the clinical  picture. So your doctor is the best to explain that to you and if you are not convinced, you can always get a second opinion, .

Urine collection: You will need to collect your urine for 24 hours and send that collection, along with blood work to determine your creatinine clearance and protein content of the urine.

If you have a protein content of your urine > 150 mg/24 hours, you have an abnormal amount of urine.

Depending on the amount of proteinuria, you may need to have further blood tests to determine if the cause of the proteinuria.

Correlate blood test: Increased cortical echogenicity with mild corticomedullary differentiation,  usually means medical renal disease. Kft probably means kidney function tests. These are blood tests such as serum creatinine, bun, and GFR (glomerular filtration rate).
