my question is can an iud cause abnormal pap smears?

Probably not: but you should ask your gyn just to be sure.  Abnormal Pap smears can be caused by vaginal inflammation or infection, but not with IUD's.

No: Abnormal pap smears are caused by hpv or human papillomavirus.  Hpv is very common and nearly 80% of us will acquire a strain of it in our lifetimes.  Fortunately, most peaople will clear hpv without the need for intervention.  Close follow-up is required to ensure that the abnormal cells resolve rather than progress.  If your pap was abnormal after iud removal, it was likely just coincidental.

i just had a pap and iud removal. the doctor said my pap was abnormal. is this because of my mirena (levonorgestrel)?

Not necessarily: While IUD may induce some inflammation and affect the PAP result, the nature of the abnormality is not known from your message. Was the PAP tested for HPV? If not you may wish to find that out. Depending on the severity of the abnormality you may be just followed, referred for colposcopy or treated for inflammation, depending on the results.

Bleeding irregularly: Depending on your desire for future fertility, an excellent option would be a uterine ablation if you are finished with having children.  It is safe, quick, and with little to no downtime.

: It would be very easy to think something was wrong.  Asking about an IUD is part of the normal GYN exam, so it may be nothing, but asking your doctor would be appropriate - specify what was worrying you.  Just as you asked your question here.

i have an iud inserted in may, i stopped spotting last month. i got a pap smear on tues and i haven't stopped heavily bleeding. is this normal?

Not necessarily: There are 2 types of iud, copper and progesterone.The Progesterone iuds are better at regulating/stopping the menses. The copper iud can be associated with irregular bleeding.Inflammation on the cervix can cause bleeding after the pap. Bleeding could be due to either. You obviously have a provider, i would discuss this with the provider that placed the iud and performed the pap.

went to gyno, got a routine exam done (not a pap smear). now (4 days later) i am bleeding (quite a bit). it started the day of exam and got worse from there. i have iud and havent had a period in months. is this normal? what should i do?

Copper IUDs: bleed more, however progestin IUD's can allow some bleeding. If the bleeding continues, an exam, ultrasound with your doctor is appropriate.

dec 20 had hysteroscopy d&c pap and iud inserted . jan6 got infection .. still bleeding pain etc... should i be looking at a total hysterectomy?
