Definitely not!: Please have your 7 month old examined by his/her doctor to see if any treatment is indicated. Cough and cold medications (other than acetaminophen or ibuprofen for fever/pain) are not safe for a baby of this age and would not help. He/she should be checked to make sure his/her chest is clear and check for ear infection.

: Use of nasal saline and gently suctioning the mucus is just as effective. The cough syrup has side effects and is best avoided at this age. Monitor temperature, test for COVID-19. Antibiotics for pneumonia or other bacterial cause.

Generally not used: Generally decongestants are not recommended in children younger than age 4-6 because of the potential for side effects. If your child is having allergic congestion you should check with your doctor about meds, but a tsp of benadryl, (diphenhydramine) or 1 tsp of loratidine, the anti histamine in lorinase would be ok. But check with your doctor
saline nose sprays can also aid in combating nasal congestion

Consider "none": These used to be given out routinely as prescription meds before they became over the counter. Now we don't recommend them at all under 6 if at all. So many kids ended up in ER's with overdoses that they took a look at the benefit/risk analysis.If you just want to be doing something, it can be done, but studies show no true benefit under 6.

No: When used as directed, cough meds are safe. Abusers will either drink large amounts of cough meds or concentrate the liquid.

Rarely used in US: The recommended dose is .05mg/kg every 8 hours to start and yo to .15 mg/kg every 8 hours. This is rarely used in the us where standard asthma therapy includes inhaled steroids as maintenance with beta agonist inhalers for acute events. Some physicians would use this as a cough med for kids with mild infectious bronchospasm.

By age: Dosing for zyrtec (cetirizine) is by age. If under 6, give one teaspoon, a maximum of 5mg a day, if more than 6, give 10mg or 2 teaspoons.
