Corneal edema: Fuch's is an age related problem with the cornea.  The inner lining of the 3-layer cornea is a sheet of cells which pump fluid out of the cornea to keep it transparent.  These cells are present for a lifetime and do not divide.  But there is a slow, steady loss which is not a problem for most.  But some lose too many, the pump fails, fluid enters the cornea and the vision drops. That is fuch's.

Eye exam: An ophthalmologist needs to examine the corneas under a slit lamp bio microscope to determine what the opacities are. A corneal opacity does not mean you have a dystrophy .  Visual acuity, location in the corneal layer, pattern, family history and medical history are a few other points to determine.

Yes: This is a rare corneal dystrophy. Patients with the disease have abnormal metabolism of cholesterol. The cholesterol and other fatty substances are deposited in the cornea causing it to lose transparency. In some cases, this may result in the need for a corneal transplant.

: You use hypertonic saline (5%) and soft contact lens for mild disease. For severe disease, cornea transplant is the treatment of choice.

Hereditary problem: This is a rare hereditary disease of the back layer of the cornea. It can be progressive in some patients and non-progressive in others. If the impact on vision is mild, nothing needs to be done. If it is severe, surgery may be indicated.
