: Sounds like you have seborrheic dermatitis along with possibly an early onset male pattern hair loss. Certain salicylic acid shampoos along with a 2% ketoconazole shampoo  should help. There is a topical minoxidil { Rogaine} for the hair loss and an oral prescription, Propecia, that might be beneficial. See your dermatologist for additional confirmation/advice.

No: Life's difficult enough without this kind of foolish stuff.  All men lose the hair on their temples at about age 20. Whether it progresses is genetic and closely related to how much chest hair you're naturally blessed with. We remember the First Americans wearing their hair long but baldness was and is rare among them.

Genetic cause?: The medical problems that need to be excluded are an under active thyroid gland or autoimmune disease. Blood tests will help diagnose. Pregnancy, weight loss, stress/trauma, too much vitamin A are other causes. Because of your age, I suspect androgenetic alopecia, a genetic tendency to lose hair as the follicles themselves shrink. Continue working with a good dermatologist with an interest in hair

Genetic not shower: Your hair loss is a genetic trait that is usually acquired from your Mother's father. Ask to see a picture of him at 19 or 20 chances are you have the same hairline. Take hot or cold showers it won't change your hairline.

Receding hair line: There are over the counter treatments for a receding hairline, like Minoxidil that are helpful.  Since the hair loss is in a 17 year old, i would recommend a visit to a dermatologist to make sure there are no other reasons for the hair loss.

A few options: To stop a receding hairline nonsurgically the most common option is propecia, (finasteride) hair and skin vitamins will also help.  Also make sure any dandruff is under control
surgery is also a great option but ca be expensive.  This however is permanent.

Hair transplant: Hair transplants are the best way to address a receding hair line.  It won't stop the hair loss in the area.  Those hairs are falling out because they are sensitive to Dht whereas the grafts are not.

Hairloss: Rogaine (minoxidil) is over the counter and helps both sexes.  Propecia has been shown to help men.  There are some findings it may help women, but it is not normally prescribed for females.
