several tests prove i don't have acid reflux. nexium, (esomeprazole) the acid reflux drug, is the only thing that can manage my ibs-like symptoms. any idea why?

Nexium (esomeprazole) is for reflux: First of all Nexium (esomeprazole) is used for acid reflux and not for ibs.
Secondly we do not know what tests you had and what your symptoms are
but if you are symptom free with Nexium (esomeprazole) you probably are being treated for acid reflux and not for ibs symptoms
i suggest you discuss with your treating physician or gastroenterologist about your condition and treatment.

i found an article online that says acid reflux drugs (especially ppi's) can cause dementia and neuropathy because it reduces vit b12. is this true?

May reduce B12: Medications that reduce acid production in the stomach may reduce our absorption of vitamins because we don't digest food as well.  Some people also naturally don't absorb B12 well, so it may be low for other reasons.  Low vitamin B12 can cause reversible neuropathy and memory loss.  Luckily vitamin b 12 levels can be checked by blood tests and easily replaced by pills or shots if deficient.

Not quite: However if the conditions causing the reflux are still present reflux symptoms will restart once the medications are stopped. Restarting the medication for GERD will help. Avoiding smoking, upright during meals and at least 1 hr after meals

Alternatives GERD: A good alternative daily recipe for acid reflux:
1/4 tsp baking soda
1 tbsp honey
2 tbsp aloe vera juice
1/8 tsp virgin coconut oil
in 4 oz of water.

Ginger is also good for promoting digestion.

Of course, avoiding things that worsen reflux such as caffeine, fatty foods, chocolate, alcohol or nicotine is key as well.

: They are sold over the counter. These drugs do not prevent reflux, only help to reduce the acidity of the gastric juice so it won't hurt your food pipe (esophagus) when this juice goes in the pipe. You should try pepcid or tagamet first because these do not have long term side effect. If they fail, you can use prilosec, prevacid, nexium, etc. You should learn antireflux measures (please google it)

PPIs;H2blockers: Proton pump inhibiters like omeprazole, nexium, Prevacid or dexelent by itself or in combination with h2 blockers like ranatadine; Reglan (metoclopramide) will relieve the symptoms of non acid laryngopharyngeal reflux.Robinul forte can also be used as it cuts down the pepsin secretion to some extent.
Along with that life style modifications, elevating the head end of bed avoidfoods like dairy, wheat;eggs, wt loss.

Yes: Class of h2-blockers (which ranitidine is in) are felt to be safe when taken long-term.

It is possible: as propranolol may relax smooth muscle in  your stomach leading to delayed food transit and heartburn.

Depends: If you have been comfortable with Prevacid all these years , why change it ?I hope you have had an endoscopy done , if not i recommend you get it done. If you want you can try Zantac (ranitidine)
