See a spine surgeon: Scoliosis usually does not require surgery unless the curve is severe or causing compromise to organs, such as the lungs and heart.  I recommend you see a spinal surgeon to discuss what your options are and determine your lung capacity.

Yes and no: Running improves stamina and lung function but is not an asthma treatment. Running can cause an asthma attack but can be prevented by use of an inhaler prior to running.

No smoking: First advice. Absolutely. No smoking.  Lot of my patient in end stage COPD with all those symptoms still smoke which seems ridiculous but happens.  Continue this inhalers.   Take xanax (alprazolam) three times a day. Do purse. Lip breathing.  Try to sleep well.    Wish you best luck.

Not always: Depending on the severity of asthma, some do not respond to steroids. Another medication for severe asthma that may work if you have allergies is xolair. See an allergist, get tested and see if you are a candidate for it.

Status asthmaticus: If you are in the midst of an exacerbation of asthma and are using accessory muscles during the attack and showing hyperinflation, you are having very serious respiratory distress, build up of carbon dioxide and continued symptoms will lead to respiratory fatigue and possible respiratory arrest. You should be hospitalized to get your asthma under control ASAP.

hi, i got my results from a pulmonologist and need it interpreted. it says "the reduced diffusing capacity indicates a moderately severe loss of functional alveolar capillary surface." im 22 and complained of chest tightness and shortness of breath?

: Your results show a Moderately severe decrease in the function of your lungs. What we cannot tell from what you have quoted is the cause of this problem, and hence what the treatment should be. You should return to your pulmonologist for further explanation, or you might consider a second opinion , in addition. Given this problem’s severity, I would not ignore it. Good luck.

Lung function: Usually a lung capacity is the total amount of air you can take &amp; hold upon a deep breath. It is part of the lung capacities (TLC, IC, EC) &amp; function.
3 basic capacities: Total lung cac. inspiratory capacity &amp; expiratory capacities. If decreased is a restrictive problem like in fibrosis but many others.  if increase is an obstructiver air problem (asthma, COPD, etc)

: It depends on what is limiting it, if anything. In some diseases treatment of the underlying disease and improve lung capacity, or the ability to inflate the lung.  It is difficult to say more without more specific knowledge of the situation

Need to find out why: During a pulmonary function test, there are typically three measurements taken.  First, how well the air "moves" in and out of the lungs.  Copd, asthma, bronchitis, etc are things that would cause it to drop.  Second, the efficiency of oxygen transfer is measured, the diffusion.  Last, the lung sizes are measured.  Again, which value is down and why its down is the most important thing to find.
