Check the hair: Swollen lymph nodes can result from diseases of the back half of the head &amp; scalp. An infection or a skin cancer could be the culprit. Get to a general surgeon, ENT or dermatologist for a thorough evaluation.

Monitoring Centers: Lymphatic system absorbs/carries things too big to go into the arteries/veins like bacteria eaten by white cells and digested food. Lymph nodes "taste" the lymph for anything bad like bacteria/viruses/cancers, etc. When it detects a problem, it alerts the immune system and your body reacts. They enlarge in response to the inflammation they create when they react. They shrink when all is well.

Lumps: Could be many things - sebaceous cyst, infected lymph node - which are usually benign.  With all lumps however, it is always best to let your doctor review it and if need be, monitor it for a few months to ensure it is nothing.  Serious lumps may need biopsy and referral.  Lumps are always a do-not-ignore item on our lists :)

Infection: You may have a local infection of the scalp that maybe causing swelling of the occipital lymph nodes I would suggest you see a physician and get a definitive diagnosis

: Yes. I would have any growth/ lymph node that persists  more than 1 month evaluated.

: It IS normal to feel occipital lymph nodes.  The real issue is whether or not they are changing.  If it’s more or less the same over the past month or 2, its probably normal.  However, if it is persistently enlarging or more nodes are developing, it would be wise to check with your physician regarding other possibilities.

i've had a swollen occipital lymph node on back right side of neck since i was 18. i'm 24 now and the node is fairly small feeling on the surface.  it painless to the touch. when i pinch the skin under it feels like it may be the size of a half inch ?

May be lipoma: This may not be a lymph node and consider a liphoma. Ask your physician to clarify.
