This "skin" is made up of a lining cell called epithelium. When these body parts are exposed to irritation or injury there can be changes in the lining cells that reflect evidence of this injury or irritation that are not very specific for any one disease, called reactive.

Bx cervix: Reactive cells defined on Pap and probably not on bx-colcoscopy.  Pap smear stain only indicates cell type based on shape and as such has a 40% error.  Monoclonals specific to cervix Ca being planned for clnical trials .  It picks up presence of squamous Ca protein only found in normal cells expressing the protein.  When available this test will be 100% accurate and suggest when Ca is developing.

Benign: That usually means there was some degree of inflammatory activity at the cervix when the pap smear was taken.  That is often seen when there is an infection such as an std or more likely, an overgrowth of yeast, whether or not that woman has any symptoms of infection or of yeast. That finding usually does not require any additional work-up or concern except possibly a cervical culture.

: "ASCUS" is an acronym for "abnormal squamous cells of uncertain significance", and can be an early sign of some strains of human papilloma virus "HPV".  A repeat pap smear and/or colposcopy may be requested by your physician, but it does not mean a malignancy is present.
