Benign: That usually means there was some degree of inflammatory activity at the cervix when the pap smear was taken. That is often seen when there is an infection such as an std or more likely, an overgrowth of yeast, whether or not that woman has any symptoms of infection or of yeast. That finding usually does not require any additional work-up or concern except possibly a cervical culture.
