Relax: Stop worrying about your low WBC unless either neutrophils or lymphocytes are EXTREMELY low. There is enormous human variability here and minor anomalies indicate nothing. I'd accept the HIV results and be thankful for good health. Enjoy it.

Unlikely: Do you have exposure to HIV and have you had serial test since last possible exposure. you can not diagnose HIV by CBC changes even if suggestive

i am worried about rare strains of hiv like type o.  i got a fourth generation hiv 1 and 2 antibody/antigen in the us fro quest diagnostic and am worried the test missed these strains.  there seems to be conflicting answers.  this makes me anxious?

HIV type O: Such strains of HPV are extremely rare, especially in the US, and most such persons test positive anyway. You may as well worry about being struck by lightning:  the risk is a lot higher than having undetecable HPV. Do your best not to worry about this.

: There are no "rare types or subtypes of HIV" not detected by standard tests. But clearly you are obsessed, and obsessions do not respond to factual information. Yes: Yes. However, if a person (unwisely or unfortunately, depending on his or her life's circumstances) has recurring possible HIV exposures, he may get a screening test every 3 months. The is for people who have REAL recurring possible HIV exposures, but NOT for people who don't have recurring exposures but can't stop worrying about a past possible HIV exposure, which would be a treatable OCD issue.

HIV testing: This depends upon the test employed. They are generally both sensitive and specific but false positive results do occur.  This question can be overcome with further testing, the most specific being PCR for HIV RNA. You should be seen by an expert in the management of HIV disease.

: If a 4th gen HIV combo test was negative at 6 months, you did not get HIV. Hep C seroconversion can take longer but risk of Hep C is lower. You may repeat the test at one year after exposure. Please note that Hep C is curable.

: It depends on what you mean by "rare". If a woman has HIV, the average transmission risk to her male partner is around once for every 2,500 episodes of unprotected vaginal sex. Therefore, most HIV infected males in the US caught it sexually from other men, or from shared drug injection equipment. The standard HIV blood tests are 100% conclusive by 3 months -- in fact, usually within 6 weeks.
