ive had 5 ct scans between the years 2008-2014 for various health reasons.  i might need another one.  the radiation concerns me.  is this too much?

Sounds ok, but: Although very rare, one cannot know if she will be the unlucky one to get cancer from CT's. She may never get cancer despite many CT's, or she may get cancer unrelated to the CT's. One must live life in a relaxed manner and not worry about all the possible things that can happen to unlucky people. She should ask if other imaging can be done instead of x-ray or CT but there may not be a substitute.

: Not knowing all your history &amp; clinical findings, I don't think we could advise you to skip those tests. There are no guidelines of how many CT scans one should have in their lifetime. I do know that it is more of a concern for children who are at risk for other cancers later in life. I'm confident that your physicians feel the benefits of the testing recommended outweigh any risks.

Can't compare: Can't really compare oranges to apples. What is important is using the optimal diagnostic method to pinpoint the cause of your disease instead of worrying over the radiation exposure.

The theoretical: risk of radiation induced cancer is based on your cumulative radiation dose over your lifetime.  In other words, it is the sum of all exposures, not any single particular exposure.  The radiation of 11 CTs is not likely to cause cancer, but you can calculate the theoretical increased risk with an easy to use tool at xrayrisk.com

Too much?: "too much" is a relative term. Basically no.  If you have a medical condition, ie cancer that is being monitored by ct then the benefits outweigh the risks.  If you are getting a ct for no reason then the risks (small but finite) outweigh the benefits.  Any medical procedure is not a binary state. There is a continuum of risks and benefits.

Why so many?: Why would you have weekly CT scans? Each scan has a tiny radiation risk but normally people have only a small number. If there is some very severe medical condition that requires close CT monitoring I really think the medical condition is more important than the incremental cancer risk.
