The : The concept of life support is to provide assistance or replacement of a bodily function, generally  categorized as: ventilator support for respiratory failure, medications or pump for heart failure, dialysis for kidney failure.  Some consider intravenous nutrition life support also.  In some cases, the acute insult that leads a patient to needing life support is removed and the body heals, thus that life support is no longer needed.  In some cases, the body was already weakened, or the insult is not reversible, so that life support is continued.  Intensive care units utilize life support to differentiate their role in the hospital compared to the regular nursing floors.

The decision to remove life support, depends on the prognosis of the initial insult, the overall condition, including age, quality of life and other medical conditions, and most importantly, the wishes of the patient and secondarily the family when the patient cannot make an informed decision.  Withdrawal of life support can be considered when it is clear that the patient will not recover to a meaningful quality of life.

Although euthanasia is considered different than life support withdrawal, in that both acts hasten death, in the case of life support withdrawal, we are simply taking away a crutch that keeps the patient alive allowing the normal disease process to lead to death to occur.  In the case of euthanasia, there is active participation of health care providers to provide medications that engage another process of death.

They are sedated: When someone is put on the ventilator, we usually keep him sedated, the level of sedation varies based on the underlying illness,  but in most cases we keep it light so the person is able to open eyes and communicate, in certain cases, we need deep level of sedation and the patient would not be able to communicate.

That : That depends on both your definition of life support and the technique your surgeon uses to connect the new liver to your body.

Some surgeons use a method that requires blood to temporarily be shunted outside the body, and this bypass might be considered "life support."  however, other surgeons use a technique that does not require bypass.

Al patients undergoing liver transplant are under very deep anesthesia, and are unable to breath on their own.  Keeping the blood oxygentated therefore requires a machine to pump air in and out of the lungs.  Some people might consider this machine to be a form of "life support, " though if that's the case, then most people undergoing major operations are on life support.

A : A person on a ventilator (a machine that pushes air into his or her lungs) is usually very ill and would not be able to communicate very well, much less sit up in bed.  However, that's not always the case. It is certainly possible for a person to be awake, alert, and aware, and yet not have the strength required to breath independently.  In such cases, the person could definitely communicate (by writing notes).

Depends: People who have had critical illness may take a very prolonged period of time to recover with persistent weakness,  and other problems including difficulties with concentration, memory and anxiety. How long problems like this or other problems associated with critical illness lasts ca nvary depending on the specific events and the presence of any chronic diseases.  Many will recover 100% though.

False Positive : There are a variety of common medications (some over the counter, some prescription) that can give a false positive result for Methamphetamines: Metformin (glucophage), Trazadone, Fluoxetine (prozac), Labetolol (trandate), Psuedoephedrine (sudafed), Buproprion (Wellbutrin), and Quinolone antibiotics (Ciprofloxacin, Levofloxacin) Talk to your Dr about meds you take that could cause this.

People do not seem : Comfortable with your question. Often people do not make it despite the valiant efforts of physicians to save their lives. If someone you know is on life support, speak the doctors to find out the prognosis. Doctors are human and have a tough time accepting when they can't save someone. Sometimes palliative care is all they can do, to keep the person comfortable with loved ones at their side.
