Start with: Consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon.  If he/she thinks you are a candidate for surgery, a mammogram and medical evaluation will likely follow.  Also consult with your insurance company to see if this is a covered procedure.  This is a major operation that should not be taken lightly.

Reduced symptoms: Large breasts get in the way and may cause discomfort. Lower neck, upper back, shoulder and breast pain are often significantly reduced or eliminated with breast reduction. Shoulder rutting from bra straps and under breast rashes are also eliminated. Breast reduction surgery reduces the risk of breast cancer. Clothes fit better, exercise is easier and women feel better about themselves.

A trade off...: Of smaller breasts that cause less neck and back pain for scars on the breasts. Usually outpatient surgery with general anesthesia. Most breast reduction patients say that the pain is like that from doing too many pushups: soreness in the chest muscles. It should easily be controlled with the medication given to you by your surgeon. Most patients return to regular activities in 10-14 days.

Breast Reduction: I have done over 300 breast reductions with all but two of those patients winding up happy they had the surgery.  Most find the discomfort transient, quite tolerable and well worth it to relieve them of the symptoms they originally sought treatment for.

Not particularly: Women with overdeveloped breast generally seek surgery to relieve pain.  With surgical reduction, the pain from the weight of the large breast is immediately and permanently relieved: many women leave the hospital with less pain than they had when they came in!

It can: In women with large breasts there is increased stresses on the lumbar spine to stay upright and balanced.  In some cases breast reduction has been effective at reducing the stresses and improving back pain.

Maybe, maybe not!: If your overall growth is stable and your breasts have stopped growing for at least 6-12 months, you could be a candidate for breast reduction surgery (but will require parental consent until age 18). This operation costs about $8000 total as an outpatient in our accredited office surgical facility; hospital care is usually much more costly (and no better). Insurance may cover if criteria are met!

Extensive: An anchor shaped incision is made on each breast with circles around the nipples. Then, large portions of he breast are removed.
