See your doctor: May need 6 months. If you have abnormal clotting factors in your blood, you may need it longer.

See below: If this is an only episode of pe and you don't have recurring risk factors such as a clotting disorder, malignancy, autoimmune disease, birth-control pills, smoking etc, you usually wouldn't need to take Coumadin (warfarin) for more than 6 months. Share all of the above with your new doctor!

Depends : initially every few days. Eventually hopefully once every two or possibly more weeks. Whatever you do make sure to get tested. If you take Coumadin (warfarin) without monitoring it can be very dangerous.

A recurrent pe: needs to be ruled out . If the ache on your left side then it could be a heart trouble and needs to be investigated.

Preferably NO: Nothing good comes from smoking-particularly after pe.

i have a dvt in rt calf and thigh plus bilat pulmonary embolism what type of exercises can i do. i am currently taking coumadin (warfarin) and my last pt was 3.0.?

No restrictions : Within reason, you should be able to participate in any activity that your exercise endurance can tolerate.  Of course, no bull riding, stockcar racing, jumping out i planes etc.....

Heparin is used: To achieve rapid full anti coagulation. Warfarin is then introduced, but takes 5-7 days to establish a therapeutic level.

Yes, but: It is rare, and usually only associated with a cancer like leukemia.

Probably not: The warfarin probably has nothing to do with your illness and diarrhea. But if you have a saddle embolus, you are very lucky to be alive!

my wife had a pulmonary embolism in oct 2015. it was medically completely unprovoked. she has been using warfarin and later switched to xarelto. for how long should she continue to use xarelto and does she need to go for follow up scans at some point?

There is a 10% per: year recurrence rate of unprovoked PE. There is about a 30% risk of death associated with PE. This means that she has a 50:50 chance of recurrence in the next 5 years and a 1/3 chance of dying associated with the recurrence when it occurs. She should stay on Xarelto indefinitely. Follow up scans are not needed in the absence of symptoms.
