It's a good idea to : Be evaluated by a doctor. Because a walking boot comes lower than the knee it may not be helpful.

i have a muscle strain on the outer side of my left thigh about halfway between the knee and hip. it was started by overuse. what is best treatment?

Outer hip strain: Rest, ice, elevation, NSAIDS( motrin ,aleve (naproxen) if  no contraindications) , massage, possibly muscle relaxant and kinesiotaping.. If knee pain there may be elements of iliotibial band syndrome. .As the acute pain resolves consider  stretches. Follow with doctor/urgent care/ orthopedist.

pain around achilles tendon with a little swelling in the area. also pain in knee and muscle spasms in the back of the calf. does this sound like dvt? my leg feels kinda tight and heavy or is this a muscle strain? also have foot pain around ankle

Leg- heavy &amp; tight: Have you had a history of injury to your leg or ankle? Have you been involved in strenuous activities lately where you used your legs, such as walking, running or biking that was more than usual? 
It is important to see your PCP or Podiatrist right away for a clinical exam. After the clinical evaluation, the doctor can determine if you need to have a Venous Duplex done to rule out a DVT.

behind your knee 
when you exercise it may appear larger
also sometimes the amount of fluid and therefore the size of the cyst may vary with
activity level
you may not be doing anything wrong
if youre concerned, you might want to check
it out.
