Yes and no.: The habitat of pubic lice is hair-bearing areas; they like to set up housekeeping next to a hair shaft and rarely venture very far from it. But shaving your pubic hair does not guarantee that you won't get pubic lice. They can infest other hairy areas on the abdomen, back, legs, or even eyebrows. And unless you shave meticulously, there are always a few hairs (or stubble) for lice to find.

Pubic Lice: A lice-killing lotion containing 1% Permethrin or a mousse containing pyrethrins and piperonyl butoxide can be used to treat pubic ("crab") lice. These products are available over-the-counter without a prescription at a local drug store or pharmacy. These medications are safe and effective when used exactly according to the instructions in the package or on the label.

Shaving is not: Sufficient. Pubic lice (phthirus pubis) can be treated with otc product like nix (permethrin) or rid. Other options are prescription medications like Malathion (kept on affected area for 8 to 12 hours); invermectin (2 pills – may need to repeated in 10 days); lindane (if you have failed other treatments).

Treat For Head Lice: There are 3 types of lice: head, body, &amp; pubic. Pubic (crab) have distinctive appearance from other two. Head &amp; body lice appear similar but head are smaller. Head lice are best suited for survival in scalp environment; can be found elsewhere on body but they do not thrive in these areas. Suggest treating scalp w/ over-the-counter head lice medication. See doctor if more lice appear in pubic area.

OTC meds may work: Those little critters need hair to attach their laid eggs to. The adults don't live very long, so if a person prevents any eggs from attaching to his body, he will make them disappear. Goal number one:  find every egg and destroy it (this is easy if no hair, because no hair means no eggs). Goal number two:  kill the lice (sometimes there is only one, and there's no place to hide if no hair).
