what is the difference between ptu (propylthiouracil) and carbimazole? is it possible to switch medication?

Different: Carbimazole is converted to an anti=thyroid drug methimazole. Ptu (propylthiouracil) is a different anti-thyroid drug. Both are effective. Ptu (propylthiouracil) better, but not used as much since it can be associated with liver disease. Both have potential side effects. Talk w/your doctor.

Don't understand: These drugs are used in the treatment of hypothyroidism.  I am assuming you mean are they effective in the treatment of hyperthyroidism.  That is something you need to discuss with you physician and endocrinologist.  There are many causes of hyperthyroidism and it will depend on that.

Hyperthyroidism: Ptu (propylthiouracil) & propanolol are standard drugs used to treat an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) which can lead to weight loss & fast heart rate. Propanolol is a beta blocker that keeps your heart from beating too fast. How high?: Hi. It sounds like you are not jaundiced and have no liver disease - correct? I bet what you have is a defect in bilirubin conjugation called Gilbert's disease, where unconjugated bilirubin is relatively high and conjugated bilirubin is relatively low. It can be confirmed by measuring direct bilirubin (conjugated) and calculating indirect bilirubin (unconjugated). Gilbert's causes no harm.

Methimazole is also: Available and then there is radioiodine -- but any of the antithyroid drugs will work if taken at adequate doses for long enough to deplete stored up, previously manufactured, thyroid hormone. Check w/your doctor.

Yes,but: Ecstasy false positives have not been associated with those drugs, but otc drugs with decongestants, nose drops , nyquil, and weight loss drugs can. Do any of these ring a bell?

Liver toxicity: Fulminant hepatic failure is the most serious adverse effect (black warning exist for such risk). Other side effects include rash , joint pain and rarely bone marrow suppression.

PTU (propylthiouracil): Ptu (propylthiouracil) has an ongoing risk on bone marrow suppression and liver toxicity which is low but real.  Some, but not all practitioners limit it's use to 1-2 years and then move to permanent management like radioactive iodine or surgery.

It's possible.: Ptu (propylthiouracil) can cause a skin reaction (hives, rarely), liver problems (more rare, but that's why it's use is severely restricted these days), and a drop in the white blood cell count (extremely rare).
