are anti psychotics helpful in people with autism?

They can be at times: Risperdal which is an antipsychotic is one of the only drugs currently with fda approval for use in patients with autism, including children. It is used for aggressive behavior, whether it be towards others or self injurious as well as for mood swings.  It can be effective but is not without side effects such as weight gain and uncontrollable muscle movements. Others are used but are off label.

Sounds problematic: All things are possible- is this a good idea? Does the autistic person have any sense of danger ? Does the depressive disorder with psychotic tendencies have an issue with violence. This could work or end badly...A lot of discussion would need to take place before such cohabitation happened. Safety of both needs to be covered.

my nephew is 23 has autism. he is on clonazepam 0.5mg twice a day and risperidone  0.25mg twice a day and divalproex extended release 500 mg a day. for temper he still needs alittle something what do you suggest no psychotic drug please.

No quick fix: Temper is a nonspecific complaint. This could be due to a specific comorbid condition that itself requires further treatment, or part of autistic irritability. Often we see cognitive rigidity as difficulty w/ transitions.

FDA approved agents for irritability in autism are Abilify and RIsperdal. He needs to be seen by a child psychiatrist or neurologist w/ expertise in this group of patients.

Delusions: In these cases, delusions are part of the psychotic phase, such as grandiose delusions in bipolar disorders or the bizarre delusions in schizophrenics.

Depends: This is a question that cannot be answered.  It depends on each person's chemistry and  individual circumstances.  For one individual it may be a matter of months and another may be a lifetime.  Your doctor can provide an estimate for you.

They do not.: Delusions are fixed beliefs that do not change, even when a person is presented with conflicting evidence. They do not have to be extreme as in "nonbizarre" such as the belief that they are under police investigation despite lack of evidence.

Don't know.: To answer this question a very thorough history must be taken.  It may be that you will need medication for the rest of your life to help with this.  Consult a mental health practitioner to help you find the answer.

Unknown: As far as the duration of a psychotic episode, there is no way of knowing because it depends on the cause and the environment.  As for recurrence, depending on the above features, it is impossible to say.  However, these can often be controlled with the proper medication.

Reason for psychosis: It is an interaction btn predisposition and environment.  Drugs and medications can trigger psychosis in vulnerable people. Paranoia, which is a form of psychosis can be triggered by an exaggerated response to trauma or stress or too much listening to fox "news".

Medical psychosis: A number of medical problems can cause psychosis, including:

alcohol and certain illegal drugs, both during use and during withdrawal
brain diseases, such as parkinson's disease, huntington's disease, and certain chromosomal disorders
brain tumors or cysts
dementia (including alzheimer's disease)
hiv and other infections that affect the brain
some prescription drugs, such as steroids and stimulants.Stroke and epilepsy are also possibilities.Electrolyte abnormalities, multiple sclerosis, damage to visual and auditory nerves, deafness, thyroid or parathyroid abnormalities, adrenal corticoid abnormalities, blood gas abnormalities, autoimmune disorders including lupus, and blood sugar abnormalities.This of course is just a partial list.
