Benzodiazepine : Unfortunately, the risk of grogginess is essentially the same with either drug as they are both benzodiazepines. In my clinical experience, it is very difficult to predict which patient will have grogginess or not as we all metabolize drugs differently.

Consider evaluation: The key to treating insomnia is finding the underlying cause. Some patients have insomnia because they are born with it but most patients have insomnia secondary to another medical issue. Commonly this includes anxiety/depression but medical issues such as pain and reflux can keep people awake at night. Biofeedback  may be superior to pills. Consider an evaluation by a sleep specialist.

Different: Everyone is different.  It also depends upon why you are having difficulty with sleep.  If you suffer insomnia talk to your doctor about this.  There are many medications that can be used for  this disorder.

Estazolam: Few of my patients were on Estazolam (prosom) for short period of time & did ok for sleep.

Estazolam:  Taking any amount over the dose your doctor prescribed is "too much".  Most adults receive 1 mg/ night. Some elderly adults may take 0.5 mg/night. Adult dose may go up to 2 mg/ night.

Accepted Answer

Yes, but .....: Estazolam or "prosom" is an fda approved hypnotic agent meaning it promotes sleep.  It has a rather long half life so it is still likely to be having some effects the  next morning.  For this reason it is also used to treat anxiety.  Short term use of this and other hypnotics can be helpful (up to 3 weeks).  For chronic insomnia medications are much less useful whereas behavioral treatments work.

Estazolam: I always feel uneasy answering  "how much is an overdose?" Some people ask because they want to commit suicide. Others ask because they want to use a drug recreationally and don't want to OD.  The recommended dose for this medication is up to 2 mg.  I haven't prescribed it. Per:  https://www.drugs.com/pro/prosom.html   - some people have been able to survive a 40 mg OD. Thats all the info I got.
