Strict handwashing: You and all your contacts (none of whom should be sick, by the way!) should use strict handwashing with soap and water or an alcohol sanitizer many times per day. Avoid crowds. Avoid constipation. Your physician should have given you a sheet with instructions or verbal instructions about what to expect with neutropenia related to chemo; please ask for this next time you are in the office. Be well.

Yes. : Chemotherapy typically causes death of fast growing tissues. These include the cancer and a number of normal tissues including bone marrow, hair follicles, mouth cells.  The damage to the bone marrow can cause low blood counts, especially neutropenia and low platelets.

Overdose: Chemotherapy is an effective   method of treating many malignancies.  It destroys tumor thru the effect of the cell DNA.  It as such has an effect on the cells of the immune system.  If given in high doses, the WBC count can drop and   compromise the immune system, making the patient susceptible to infection and any effect  in helping to control tumor. Count should stay at 4-5k or better.

Accepted Answer

Yes and whenever. : Probiotics are a good idea whenever you're taking antibiotics, and worth continuing for a week or so afterwards. Yogurt is good, but a probiotic tablet of e coli or acidophilus may help a little more. It really doesn't matter what time of day you take the supplement.

i have had a a low wbc ranging from 3.4-4.0 due to neutropenia for the last 4 years. i don't sick very often. my only medical history in type 1 dm. what could cause this?

Likely normal : Mild leukopenia may be a normal variant. This sometimes seen in people of african descent . If your. Doctor. Considers it a problem he may order basic lab work up for leukopenia.

Accepted Answer

Many causes: It can be viral such as ebv. You may have low hem atomic levels such as low b-12. The concern is to rule out more serious and complex disorders such as primary bone marrow or  lymphoid  disease   you need to be seen and have work up done. Ask for a hematology referral.

i have been having a low grade fever around 100 on and off for the past few days, is there any tests to find out about the low grade temp. also could this a symptom of a die-off reaction to sibo, am taking some probiotics for it. thanks!

Fever: Low grade fever can  be for various issues. Sibo could be one, but allergies, viral, bactrial infection or autoimmune problems possible too. You would need  more thorough evaluation to determine what is best for you.

Yes: Adding probiotics is always a good idea when you have to take medicines like antibiotics or steroids long term.

can methotrexate and sulphasalzine cause neutropenia.i have ra and low blood count, blood tests every 2/3 weeks. what happens next?

Accepted Answer

Rule out...: With an unexplained drop in your neutrophils every 2-3 weeks, you may have cyclic neutropenia. Nobody knows how common this is, and i suspect that relatively mild cases get overlooked. You may want to read up & talk with your treating physician about this. I'll want to hear what other healthtap physicans have to say.
