No: Non-stress tests evaluate the baby's heartbeat.  They are ordered if there is a medical complication with the pregnancy such as diabetes or pre-eclampsia or if your pregnancy goes past your due date.  They are also done if you aren't feeling the baby move for more than an hour or two.  If you have an uncomplicated pregnancy you will likely not need a non-stress test.

Talk to your doctor: A pregnancy that reaches 42 weeks will need to be evaluated with a Non Stress Test. This lets us know how the baby is doing. Most doctors will induce a woman at 42 weeks. Please discuss this in detail with your doctor.

: An inferior vena cava diameter of greater than21 mm with reduced collapse (less than 50%) can indicate increased right atrial pressure.  With a stress test and EKG  "normal", and Holter essentially normal, your cardiologist may order an ECHO cardiogram to assess pulmonary artery pressure and ventricular ejection fraction. Ask your cardiologist to explain any potential adverse prognosis.

Imaging: Heart Imaging tests (nuclear, ultrasound &amp; MRI) are a non-invasive way of evaluating heart function performed in conjunction with physical  activity (treadmill or bicycle) or using non physical means (using intravenous medication eg. dobutamine, lexiscan, adenosine or  dipyridamole). All the above provide indirect  information on blood flow, presence of scars and the strength of heart contractions

Baby monitoring: A non-stress test is a way of checking on the baby.  We listen to and record the fetal heart for 20-30 minutes.  We are looking at the baseline heart rate and how the heart rate goes up or down.  We are looking at this to see if the baby is getting enough oxygen or if there are other problems with how the baby is doing.

Ask your OB: You really need to speak to your ob.  If the answer is not satisfactory, express that the answer is not addressing your concerns.  If no more info is forthcoming, seek a second opinion from another ob.  Do not deal with this on a message board.

Stress test: I am not aware of any guidelines recommending stress test annually in such circumstances. The Framingham risk score is the most commonly used cardiac prevention score otherwise.

You : You will be sufficiently radioactive to set off alarms at airports, ferry terminals, and border crossings.  The sensitivity of these devices is high on purpose.  However, the amount of radiation a patient emits after a cardiac nuclear scan is not considered dangerous to others.  Notice that the technologists who perform these tests do not wear lead or other radiation protection and they are around "radioactive" patients every day.  For the sake of completeness, however, i will add that pregnant women should not undergo this test and anyone who thinks they might be pregnant should have a pregnancy test before having any kind of radionuclide scan.
