i am having an allergic reaction to cutting mdf fiberboard.  the skin rash is terrible.  how much prednisone can i take and can i take benadryll .

See your doctor: I would recommend that you see your doctor to make sure this is a contact dermatitis. You would not want to take Prednisone and unless you know what you are taking it for. The dose can vary based on she, weight, & diagnosis. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is very short acting and may help itching only.

Unlikely: It will take a very high dose and a much longer course of steroid to impact your immune system.

The skin: Is the largest organ in the body. It is just as much alive as any other tissue in the body and requires the same kind of nutrients. I would suggest that you look seriously at the diet which is usually so bad in Americans. I have seen skin diseases clear up when you get rid of sugar. Try it!

Yes.: High dose prednisone can cause some skin changes, including thinning and sensitivity.  It can rarely cause muscle pain, though statins more likely cause, if he is on one of them.

i had a complete knee replacement and a few days later a very itchy rash appeared all around incision site, not responsive to prednisone or benedryl. calamine lotion calms it down a bit . my skin feels burned to the touch. and very itchy?

: If there is no exudate, swelling or tenderness surgical wound infection is less likely. You can try lidocaine patch or ointment (OTC) for those symptoms. See your surgeon if wound infection is suspected. Take care!

Incomplete lupus?: Your physician may be considering incomplete lupus, in which some features are present but there are not enough to establish the diagnosis. Rheumatology is curious in that there are a huge number of labs, but the diagnosis is usually made on history and physical exam. Incomplete lupus needs to be followed closely as there may actually be some other illness. Good luck.

High dose: There is no one correct dose for oral steroids, but most clinicians would dose according to the severity of the allergy or that particular person's previous response to oral steroids.  60 mg of prednisone is a high dose for some rashes such as hives but may be necessary for generalized allergic reaction like anaphylaxis. IDouble check with doctor to make sure that is the correct dose.

Maybe (not) . . .: Depends upon cause of rash & whether resolution of rash was coincidental to Prednisone or not. If rash due to infection & you weren't given antibiotics, then improvement was just coincidence & will probably get worse shortly, regardless of prednisone. If rash due to eczema, then hopefully steroid will keep it calm as long as you avoid irritants. So go see your doc re diagnosis & treatment.
