Unproven: It is not likely that any diet changes would be harmful, however there is also little to no proof that diet helps.

hives urticaria x 3 weeks. antihistamines and prednisone are moderately effective only with consistent use. would a skin biopsy help determine cause?

No: A skin biopsy can help prove that these are hives, but usually cannot help to identify a trigger (unless you have underlying blood vessel disease called vasculitis).  Prednisone should be avoided if possible because the hives can come back stronger when it is stopped. i took 20 mg prednisone for two days due to sudden and acute urticaria and it has been resolved . do i need to continue taking it ? how can i taper down now ? i feel my heart fluttering after taking the medicine . is that normal ?

Urticaria angioedema: Many possibilities.  Could be any medication, foods, chemicals in house, or sprays.  Sometimes clothes, anything new in house, pets, . Write down everything you do and keep searching.  Allergy test don't show everything you could react to.  Even vitamins, eye makeup, cosmetics and soap could be causing problem.

off zyrtec (cetirizine) bc of skin testing tomor but currently breaking out in hives due to my chronic urticaria. even on my lids, can i take prednisone?

Yes: Just for a day or two if necessary to get skin test done.  I am concerned that even if prednisone controlled your hives, you skin may still be too sensitive making it more likely to get a false positive reaction. I trust the skin testing is for other allergic conditions since it is rarely informative for chronic hives.

i had an urticaria crisis about 2 weeks ago that lasted for two days. i had to take prednison and diphenhydramine. now when i take a sho?

Urticaria: if it was just an acute episode, then what you received should be fine to control it, but if you keep getting the crises, or if you had it for some time, like &gt; 6 weeks, so it became chronic and needs evaluation by a specialist: a dermatologist or an allergist/immunologist. Meanwhile you can keep taking OTC cetirizine, loratadine, or fexofenadine, on regular basis, but read the labels carefully

is it possible to treat chronic urticaria without using predinisone?

Yes, it is: Chronic urticaria is sometimes very hard to treat. First line, high dose antihistamines. After higher than usual doses of these there is a plethora of medications added to those, starting with h2 blockers and montelukast. If that combination is ineffective, hydroxy-chloroquine, dapsone, cyclosporine, tacrolimus, ivig and possibly xolair. Can be tried. See an allergist/immunologist.

Hive treatment: In general, it will take a couple of hours since Prednisone needs time to suppress the production of histamine. On the other hand, antihistamine works faster. It suppresses the hives itself. Your doctor would decide which medication works best in your situation.

i was on a 15day (60mg for 5days, 40mg for 5days, & 20mg for 5days) dose of prednisone for hives . how long will the meds continue to treat the hives?

Hives: Once you stop the Prednisone the hives may return. The most important way to stop the hives is to find the cause. You may want to see an Allergist to determine what is causing your hives.

Yes: I don't seen any interaction issue but whether you should inhaled MJ vapor or not is another issue since it is not entirely harmless.
