my preauricular pit is infected. it doesn't hurt but a stinky discharge comes out.  what happens if i don't get it fixed?

Spread: The infection will spread through your lymph nodes and you could develop cellulitis.  Eventually it can go into your blood stream.  See a physician for treatment.  Often time incision with drainage and antibiotcs is helpful.  If the abscess has already drained and none other exist, then antibiotics and careful follow up with your physicain would be appropriate.

Ear: Possible that is it the opening of a sebaceous gland or an embryologic fistula or cyst. If its red or tender you need antibiotics. Sometimes it needs to be removed in surgery

my daughter 4yrs old has preauricular pit near left ear. it is there when she was born. pus comes out from the pit not regularly but some times. is it dangerous or can be treated at this age? there is no fever or swelling, pls suggest?

: I would have her seen by an ENT surgeon. The symptoms suggest the pit is connected to a fistulous tract into a cyst that  can become more problematic over time. Having the tract &amp; cyst removed is a common treatment.

could an unsheilded ct scan and multiple x-rays at 5 weeks gestation result in any of the problems wih my son? (autism, pvl, dysplastic kidney, silent aspiration, preauricular pit, heart murmur)

Check it out: Anything is possiblepossible. We generally want to avoid radiation exposure especially in early pregnancy.
Make sure your OB knows as they may want to do more monitoring during your pregnancy.

Recurrances: You may need a second procedure. If you continue with symptoms, it may be that part of the pit still remains. Okay to check with your doc/surgeon. A second opinion may help. Good luck.

Short/long term: In the short term you can apply a warm compress near the site that should improve local circulation &amp; self healing. It is likely there is a fistula or cyst in one or both sides that may eventually need removal. An ENT can assess this &amp; proceed if needed. You may want to have her regular doc see it as they could help decide how to proceed.

Related to pit: A preauricular pit is part of a range of congenital conditions that are related to embryological development of the first and second branchial clefts. They can range from small "pits" or dimples to longer tracts known as "sinuses" or to abnormal communications called "fistulas" when these longer passages get " pinched off" or occluded, they can form a cyst which looks like a sebaceous cyst

Hole in bone: This is a finding found on imaging studies (like X-rays) of the shoulder or upper arm .  Pitting means small holes or a hole in the part of the humerus (upper arm bone) called the greater tuberosity, where ligaments attach. It can mean there has been an injury to the ligaments that attached there.   It may be an important clue if you have shoulder problems, inc. rotator cuff injuries.

Yes and No and Yes: Yes. They are good for us. But do we know all the reasons why yet? Probably not. Do we know the best way or dose to take them? Probably not.  Lots of science yet to parse this out a bit better.
