why would you still have pain after a total hip replacement. in the pre-op discussion, the dr said sometimes you don't get rid of the pain. if that happens, and it did, what should be the next step? groin pain and lateral hip area pain?

: Yes, if you have chronic atrial fibrillation and rate is under control. Cardiologist will decide how to handle your anticoagulant perioperatively. Usually, if you are taking non warfarin anticoagulant, the medication can be held one day pre-op and then restarted post op if no problem during the operation.

in december 2021 i had a left hip replacement. in 2017 i had a right hip replacement. i now have ischial bursitis and have tried a cortisone shot but did not get much relief. can the bursitis be surgical removed or drained?

: If steroid injection fails to relieve the pain significantly the diagnosis of ischial bursitis is in question, especially you have history of hip replacement. If you were already evaluated by an orthopedist you may need a second opinion. If the doctor gave you the shot is not an orthopedist, you need to see one.

3+ months: Total recovery can take up to 1 year, but most of the recovery is accomplished by 3 months post-op.  It usually involves 2-3 days in the hospital, early mobilization with full weight-bearing, driving within 6 wks, back to work on average 2 months after surgery.

Many factors: Many factors play a role in a post op hip dislocation specially after revision, poor soft tissue envelope, week muscles position of the components.Need to be properly evaluated so corrective action can be taken.

It is variable but: generally by 4 months post-op you should be comfortable sitting for that long.  Don't forget that a total hip replacement is a major surgery with a major piece of hardware.

A couple of hours: An uncomplicated primary (first one) hip replacement takes about 2 hours including the anesthesia, surgery, and dressing application. Three nights in the hospital is the medicare hospital stay. This number varies somewhat, but shorter surgical times don't always mean better. Be sure to pick a surgeon that does total hip replacement routinely.

Mild to moderate: The pain with hip replacment surgery is a function of the damage to the tissues as one tries to accurately place the new joint.  Surgeons using techniques to minimize the damage will have less pain post op.  The direct anterior approach to hip replacement offers the least damage to the muscles when performed by a surgeon experienced in this technique.

Hip replacement: Survival is great, depending upon coexisting morbidities such as dm, htn, obesity, kidney and liver functional deficits, infections, decreased immunity, malnutrition, overall wellness, etc. Check with your pcp/cardiologist/etc. To get cleared if any questions or concerns.
