It depends: If you do not hint potassium it might be ok but taking Lisinopril may cause high potassium and the idea of taking potassium may not be tight. At time when patients are on high dose diuretics they have tendency to loose potassium in that case potassium needs to supplemented.

regarding dried fruit, i thought raisins and prunes don't need preservatives. my last package of prunes had potassium sorbate. why is that needed?

Preservative: Potassium sorbate is a natural preservative that serves basically the same function as sulfites.  It is also used as a flavor enhancer in baby food.  Like sulfates, it is "generally regarded as safe" by the fda.

Accepted Answer

Muscle and cardiac: Mild hypokalemia has no symptoms.Moderate hypokalemia, with serum potassium concentrations of 2.5-3 meq/l, can cause muscle cramps and weakness, constipation etc .Severe hypokalemia there is flaccid paralysis. Heart rhythm problems may occur at different levels.

Low potassium: Low potassium will not create any developmental problems with the fetus at 37+ weeks, but can cause muscular cramping issues for you as the mother. Bananas are a great source for potassium, naturally.

Not necessarily: During pregnancy, some women (especially those with prior histories of depression and anxiety) can be at risk for developing depression and anxiety. This can be related to the physical and hormonal changes associated with pregnancy as well as the stress of the pregnancy (change is stressful even when it is a good change). Low potassium is not directly related to either, but can also occur.

Potassium worthless: Potassium supplements do not have any benefit for urinary discomfort. Your best approach is to determine the cause of the symptoms and treat it appropriately.

Edema: Lower extremity edema ( pedal edema) is very common in pregnancy especially during the final weeks. It is due to the pressure of the gravid uterus on the pelvic blood vessels. Elevate your feet as much as possible, limit salt intake and drink at least 64 ounces of water daily.
 Also,make sure your blood pressure is normal.

Anemia: You are not going to die.  Your symptoms are commonly  from mal nourishment as your baby took so much nourishment out of you.  You need help to treat your anemia, and low potassium and probably low on a number of vital substances.  Start with super nutrition, take slow release iron, potassium foods e.g. bananas, get good sleep and get help with your baby.  You will get better and be OK.

Not clear: You should certainly discuss it with your obstetrician if you become pregnant. If you are placed on a vitamin by your doctor while pregnant, you should consider stopping this supplement though. (Not sure if this is a routine in Australia, but it is in the United States)  Regardless, your doctor's advice should be most important here. Good luck.

hi, after dinner, i drank a cup of store bought apple cider which contains 100% juice plus potassium sorbate preservative and immediately got abdominal pain for hours. i started to get relief after i passed gas or burped.  why does this occur?

HARD TO SAY: Hard to say. Maybe too much juice for your system. Maybe drank too fast. Maybe not related to this at all. You have to do some detective work and think of what you did and did not do what you ate etc. Sometimes too much juice is tough with the sugar and fiber.
