swollen lymph node on left side of my jaw, is this serious?

Monitoring Centers: Lymphatic system absorbs/carries things too big to go into the arteries/veins like bacteria eaten by white cells and digested food. Lymph nodes "taste" the lymph for anything bad  like bacteria/viruses/cancers, etc. When it detects a problem, it alerts the immune system and your body reacts.  They enlarge in response to the inflammation they create when they react.  They shrink when all is well.

i have swollen lymph node under my left jaw area. this has been off and on for about 8 months. any recommendations?

Maybe not a node: It may be a swollen salivary gland and not a lymph node. In any event, you need to have a doctor examine it.

Watch and wait: As it has gone down in size, it would be safe to watch and wait. You may feel the node every couple of weeks, if the lymph gland doubles in size, becomes painful, ulcerates, or other nodes become enlarged, or you develop fever, you should see a doctor.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex, if you have sex.

i have a swollen lymph node under right jaw line that gets hard when i smoke cigs and soft when i stop it swells and hurts what could cause this. ?

Salivary gland stone: I suspect you may be dealing with sialolithiasis: a stone in the submandibular salivary gland or duct. Pain and swelling often increases with eating, although I'm not aware of any association with smoking. Will often respond to conservative Rx. SEE &gt; http://bit.ly/1RH2Sx7

was being choked (under my consent) during sex. i have pain under the left side of my jaw. the lymph node feels slightly swollen. should i be worried?

Just be careful: If you have no bruise, swelling, or difficulty talking, breathing or swallowing it is probably not a problem.  Might even be completely unrelated.  However, if you do have any of the above other than a bruise, you need to be checked for injury.  
Don't ever try to pass out even in play.  You might not wake up.  Always discuss what to do if worst happens.  
Do you have a safeword?  Was it used?

lymph node under right jaw doesnt feel swollen but can be felt. no pain, no other symptoms. is it something to worry about?

Lymph node: If it has been there and is unchanged for a few months then something emergent like cancer would be unlikely.  That area would be common for a benign reactive lymph node.  Also possible to have a lipoma or other benign cyst.  Neck region could also be a thyroglossal duct cyst.  Some antibiotics may be needed for possible infection.  Consider biopsy if persists.

Feel it.: There are both salivary glands and lymph nodes that can be felt under the jaw on either side.  Lymph nodes are usually, firmer and more rubbery.  It is normal to feel the salivary glands right along the jaw bone.  Either can be tender if there is inflamation.  If structures seem to be enlarged on one side, or pain is consistent, see a doctor as you may need treatment.

See doc: There are wide variety of disease that need to be addressed , detailed history and physical exam necessary before coming to any conclusion. It may be benign or something significant.

is a lymph node that has been swollen (about 1 - 1.5 cm) under my jaw for about 10 years something to be worried about?  causes me some anxiety

Evaluate: Although that lymph node enlargement could be normal from an infection, i would recommend evaluation by a healthcare provider for further recommendations, regardless of lymph node size.
