Normal emotions: Feeling moody after a breakup (if only that) is a normal emotional response to the ending of a relationship.  Major depression is at least two weeks of feeling depressed with any four of the following: having poor sleep or over sleeping, poor concentration, low energy, feelings of excessive guilt or worthlessness, not being able to enjoy anything, having suicidal thoughts, etc.

Not always: Start w a medical eval. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or insight oriented psychotherapy can help. Don't isolate. Spend time w people. Use your support system. Get out. Don’t stagnate at home.  Get at least 8 hours of sleep/night &amp; eat healthfully.  Daily aerobic physical activity is a big +. Try acupuncture, tai chi, qi gong, yoga or meditation. Recommend the “Feeling Good Book' by Dr. David Burns.

Yes: If the reaction to a bad breakup progresses to a major depression it usually means that something else is going on under the surface.  The best advice is to seek a mental health evaluation, looking for what else is going on.

Early : If  you just recently broke up with your girlfriend in the past few weeks i would not consider that depression. Probably in a normal stage of adjustment  which is expected. If things don't progress in the next few months you may want to seek medical attention.

A breakup can hurt : So much. Time really does help to heal this type of pain. If you are feeling so bad that suicide seems like a viable option for you - then i would encourage you to seek professional mental health care. This intensity of pain will not last forever. Psychotherapy: Hard to imagine everything you must be going through. In such a circumstance, first step to address depression are to establish a daily routine that includes exercise, socialization and adequate sleep. If this helps but not enough,  professional counseling is usually the next step. Eventually, meds may be necessary, but only if above steps don't work. If suicidal, best to see care in er asap.

Feeling Good: There are several types of depression.  Reactive depression occurs as a result of loss and eventually we adjust.  If one does not adjust or if the cause is not clear certainly seek professional help.  "feeling good" by david burns is an excellent self-help book based on science.  Don't let the thickness of it intimidate you.  Take it bit by bit.  The very best to you.

Difficult situaton: Breaking up with anyone is hard.  If you are concerned about the safety of your boyfriend, consider reaching out to his therapist or doctor first and express your concern.  If he doesn't have one, try to find social support e.g. Family or friends who may be able to help.  Remember in an emergency you can always call an ambulance if he seems like he's in any danger.

Get medically: evaluated for the bloody feces. Eat at least 3 times a day even if you aren't really hungry. Talk about your feeling with someone that you trust. Seek medical help if you stay 'stuck'.

Concern is good: Try to be with people you like and trust. You don't have to do anything much but don't be alone. Help them w/ a chore or just listen to music or see a film. Eat with others, again - it need not be much - but definitely drink water (skip the booze) and lots of it. Consider a therapist to talk to. Objective views can help a lot. It's never easy even after any amount of practice. But we do live on!
