See your PCP: If you have placed the leaves in contact with your mouth you might get an allergic reaction. There's no topical treatment for poison ivy in your mouth except sucking on ice. Your doctor will inject or prescribe steroids. If the condition is impairing your breathing call 911.

Yes: The rash is caused by a type of allergy to the oil in the plant.  If the oil is still on the skin and you put the skin in your mouth then you can get swelling in and around the mouth.

Accepted Answer

Steroids: Once the oils are off of your skin and clothes (by showering and washing clothes in hot water), poison ivy is not contagious.  It is very irritation however because of what is called a type 4 immune response.  The best way to stop that response is to use some steroids like prednisone.  Any urgent care or clinic should be able to prescribe this for you.

is it safe to eat with your hands when you have poison ivy and you have a soar in your mouth?

Yes: The blisters from poison ivy do not transfer the allergic reaction. The oil from the plant does. As long as you have washed your hands with a good soap to remove the plant oil you should not transfer the rash to other parts of your body.

i am experiencing  soreness or burning inside of mouth and itchy rash on my leg, i believe i may have gotten poison ivy on my leg and scratched it before noticing what it was and maybe i got it on my mouth. anything i can do to help relieve my mouth?

Drug reaction?: Only thing I can think of affecting both the mouth and the skin would be a drug reaction. Was there a new drug introduced within 2 weeks prior to onset ? I suspect that they are unrelated since poison ivy does not  cause mouth problem unless you are chewing it . For sore mouth, try switching to Biotene toothpaste. For the skin, topical hydrocortisone . See allergist if not better.

my boyfriend has a poison ivy rash on his face and i kissed him... could it spread to my mouth?

Yes and No: Yes if he still had sap from poison ivy plants on his face at the time of kissing. No if he had already washed well since the last time he was in contact with the plants. Sometimes the sap on peoples clothes or car seats will give you the rash. Sometimes being around burning plants can give you the rash. Best to wash clothes, shower well, and then do a tick check... after coming out of the woods.

can bad case of poison ivy get into lymph nodes/and/or bloodstream if all over front of neck is very itchy/oozing open blisters..is this dangerous?

Not likely: however if you have a severe reaction, your lymph nodes may enlarge as an immune response to the exposure. Consider seeing your doctor to get a potent topical or even oral steroid. In the meanwhile, wash off every article that might have contact with poison ivy with dishwasher detergent (shoes, clothing, car mat, golf club etc).

Hydrocortisone: Hydrocortisone cream usually controls it provided there is no further exposure. Be sure to clean out everything which might have possibly been in contact with poison ivy with laundry or dish detergent.   Otherwise it will keep on coming back.  The lip is an unusual place for poison ivy (unless the lipstick has been contaminated) and thus one needs to question the diagnosis.

is vicks vaporub safe to use on a poison ivy rash to relieve itching on arms neck and face?

Accepted Answer

No vaporub: Rather than using vaporub i would recommend using a topical antihistamine. This is usually fairly effective with the itch. You can also take oral antihistamines like zyrtec or clariton to get relief. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) may help but many people get tired. This may help you at night.
