Doesn't matter where: We generally like to see the pO2 above 95 in most healthy individuals regardless of where they live. This doesn't really depend on altitude on the earth

i looked at my blood test and saw that my po2 level was 32 mmhg (test says normal range 90 - 100 mmhg). should i be worried?

Its not: I believe that the test is wrong. If your Po2 was 32 you would be very short of breath, have blue lips and finger nails and not feel well at all. this sample was either from a vein or an aberrant lab result. It should be repeated.

: Need more information. Was this breathing room air or on O2?  It means the pO2 is low and he PCO2 is high. There are many causes.   You need to discuss with the Dr who ordered the test.

Lung and kidney: If one has hypoxia, that is most likely due to damaged lung unable to pick up more o2. When someone breathes fast there is low co2, as it is breathed out. Co2 + h20 becomes h2co3 and in the kidneys become h and hco3 (bicarbonate) but since co2 is low hco3 is also low (the product) and this is the balance of the ph so ph is either normal or basic (high) due to co2 elimination by breathing.

It depends: We use lab test to help characterize the underlying condition, and to try to determine what to do next.  When they are presented in the absence of the clinical situation, we can't make any conclusions one way or another.

arterial blood gas showed my po2 was high at 103. how is this possible? i'm not on oxygen therapy or anything like that. i was breathing normally.

High PO2 level: It is important to know the rest of the blood gas test results. pH? pCO2? Bicarbonate? Your doctor can put it all in perspective for you. What was the O2 sat? If low, it might point to a methemoglobinemia, perhaps from some meds you take. Best to discuss the entire blood gas study with your provider. Normal PO2 shouldn't be above 102. .

DLCO/PFTs: I would recommend a six minute walk test, DLCO and Pulmonary function testing if you are still short of breath. If these tests are also normal, other causes do include anxiety. Cardio-pulmonary disease should be ruled out definitively and an EKG 12 lead also performed.

why would the po2 in the aleolar capillaries be higher than po2 in the left atrium?

Oxygen: The po2 in the alveolar capillaries represents the just diffused oxygen from the alveoli, by the time the blood gets to the la there is some mixing of the blood with some blood that may have gone by poorly aerated alveoli and not got as much oxygen into it.

Increased lung use: The lung is a structure with many chambers. If more of the chambers participate in breathing, more oxygen can be extracted from a breath. Assisted ventilation attempts to increase depth of breathing or pressure of air movement to involve more chambers in the process. If not, shallow breathing under lesser pressure is not doing the needed work.

Usually lower: In emphysema there is loss of normal surface area where air can exchange with blood to absorb oxygen and eliminate co2. Po2 levels typically drop especially with exertion, but may be normal at rest.
