pneumonia in a 2 year old child.  is that a minor illness or a serious one?

Varies with kid/Sx: I have treated many whose pneumonia was minor & treated easily at home with oral antibiotics.These often remain playful & active in spite of fever and rapid breathing.I have also treated some that were deeply affected by their illness, refusing to take fluids, play & overall looking bad- that needed several hospital days on IV fluids & meds before they could start playing again. Each case is unique.

are you supposed to use a vaporizer for a 2 year old child with pneumonia?

Accepted Answer

No: You are not "supposed" to have a vaporizer. If you  have one and it helps humidify the air then ok. I would not suggest buying one for pneumonia. Humidifiers and vaporizers are not as popular as they were years ago as the hot ones can burn a toddler who gets out of bed and the cool ones can grow germs if the water is not changed regularly. If it works for you, then use it. Otherwise no worries.

my 2 year old son was diagnosed with pneumonia on friday, the 21st. i wanted to know when should i take him back to the emergency room? he is taking all his medicines.

ER: The er is not the place for a follow-up visit. Make an appointment to see a pediatrician and establish a lasting relationship with a doctor that you relate to and trust and let them care for your son.  Actually, if your son is better right now and completes his medications it may not be necessary for an immediate revisit.  Make the effort to find a pediatrician. Good luck and hope he stays well.

my 2 year old was diagnosed with pneumonia this morning. he is now throwing a tantrum non stop. he missed his usual afternoon nap. is this a problem?

Treatment: Your physician may prescribe antibiotics and it  may take 24 to 48 hours  to note improvement. If he is in distress and can not breathe normally, the emergency room is appropriate. Otherwise, fluids, rest and treat fever, nasal saline for congestion will help to relieve the symptoms and discomfort.

my 2 year old was around another 2 year old my son now has pneumonia and red raised bumps on his arm and this child has mrsa could my child have this?

Accepted Answer

It's possible...: ...Particularly if any of the "red raised bumps" are pustules ("white-heads"). If so, ask your doctor to unroof one of them and culture the contents. Mrsa will usually require extra treatment, over & above whatever is being used to treat the pneumonia.

No: Vaporizors are not helpful in treating pneumonia.

my almost 3 yr old has the start of pneumonia is on amoxil (amoxicillin) can my almost 2 yr old get it? is pneumonia contagious

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily: but the organism causing the pneumonia may be contagious, even though it does not cause pneumonia in the sibling.  Pneumonia just means that an infection has spread to the air spaces in the lungs.  The same bacteria or virus could limit itself to the upper respiratory tract in another child.

my 2yr old was dx with pneumonia and put on meds. she is still getting 102-103 fever when tylenol (acetaminophen) wears off. how long does it take for pneumonia to go?

Talk to Pediatrician: After a few days of appropriate antibiotics your 2 year olds symptoms should be slowly improving. If symptoms seem to only be getting worse I would see pediatrician to determine if another broader-spectrum antibiotic is required. If there are any signs of respiratory distress should be seen in ER for possible IV antibiotics and additional support.

i've had body aches, headaches, cough/ green & now brownish-grey phlegm for a week and it's not letting up. my 2 yr old seems normal, pneumonia?

Possible Pneumonia: Your symptoms are indicative of a bacterial infections.  It could be viral.  Is there fever?  I would recommend you be seen urgently in urgent care center, your doctor's office if you can or go to the er.  A lot depends on your state of health, any chronic diseases such as pulmonary disease, diabetes or heart disease and any medications you are taking.  Get seen asap.

my 2 yr old has a cold with cough, but no fever. how likely is it that he has bronchitis or pneumonia with no fever? a play mate of his has pneumonia.

Accepted Answer

Unlikely: Unless this is mycoplasma or chlamydia, two more common causes of atypical pneumonia it is not likely that his lungs are involved.  One need not have fever to have these but it is more common to do so.  Without knowing what the cause of his playmate's pneumonia is there is no way of determining whether it is communicable.  If gets worse - see pediatrician.
