Proportions : Plasma has more liquid in it than whole blood. Glucose is dissolved mostly in the plasma component of blood. Whole blood has less of the liquid in it and therefore will have a lower glucose concentration than plasma.

Unclear question: Did you have a glucose tolerance test and only the fasting glucose was high?  How high was it? Fasting plasma glucose is 100-125 it is pre-diabetes and 126 or higher, if noted on two occasions is diagnostic of diabetes.

Yes!: You are def a diabetic.  Get a glucose meter and check some fingersticks.  Completely NL in the AM fasting is 70-100.  101-125 is borderline, &gt;125 is diabetes.  Go see a diabetes doc and get an A1C test.   Normal is up to 5.7.  Pre-diabetic is 5.7 - 6.4.  Diabetes is &gt;6.4. Valid number: A young, healthy adult can do his fasting blood sugar screening test at 10, 11, 12, or 13 hours after last eating or drinking anything with calories, and his test result should be valid. We don't do random (we just do fasting) blood glucose screening tests on normal, healthy adults.

Possibly: Metformin works by decreasing sugar production by the liver also in some cases help with weight loss. A combination of reasons - medications, change in diet and weight loss might account for the result. Good job, keep it up.

No worries: The same fasting blood sample works for Lipid Profile and Fasting Glucose testing. Usually, a 10-hour fast is adequate for either test but a patient should follow his doctor's or the lab's instructions. If only fasted for 8 hours but the lab asks for 10 or 12 hours, the lab might make the patient wait a few hours. Can do HbA1c if &gt;100mg/dL blood sugar after 8 to 14 hours of fasting... no worries.

Normal body response: When you are sick, your body secretes certain hormones in response to the stress on the body, including steroids. This will cause a rise in the blood glucose, even if the child hasn't been eating. It is totally normal and expected. She is not diabetic and nothing to worry about.

Large for gestationa: The mother has a large for gestational age infant. This is sometimes due to gestational diabetes. At times it is because of maternal overweight or the development of gestational diabetes in the future pregnancies. Even if the mother has normal fasting glucose, she should have glucose tolerance test and hemoglobin A1c to confirm that she does not have type 2 or gestatational diabetes.
