An otoplasty: Although each person is different, ear reshaping -otoplasty- usually involves changing the shape and position  of the ear cartilage. This is done through an incision hidden in back of the ear. Most often sutures are placed to pull the cartilage into a proper shape and to pull the ear closer to he head. This is a day procedure and there is usually little pain afterward and risks a small.

how early can ear surgery be performed? my toddler has floppy ears, and i know that we are going to want to have ear surgery done to pin back his ears. can this be done before he starts preschool?

Preschool : Preschool age is roughly appropriate for otoplasty.  Most surgeons wait until a child is at least 5.  This is true for a few reasons
1.  The psychological trauma of prominent ears in the school setting can be minimized early or prior to school enrollment
2.  Many of the adult growth characteristics of ears are attained by the age of 5
more recent studies have demonstrated safety in surgery and good long term results as early as age 4.  I would recommend visiting a few board certified plastic surgeons.  Draft a list of questions prior to your consutation to make the most out of your visit.

Really, nothing.: Other than wearing your hair to cover your ears, there is no non surgical "ear pinning" besides headphones or sweatband use! cartilage has natural "spring" and will come out. Surgical otoplasty is a straightforward operation that can be performed under local anesthesia (in an adult) with low risks and excellent long-term results. No!: Any attempt at corrective procedure to the cartilage portion of the ear ( the pinna) could very easily damage it, resulting in loss of ear structure, pain, and possibly infection. I would definitely recommend a plastic surgery specialist, for your own protection.

how common is asymmetry after otplasty? maybe i'm being paranoid, but i'm scared to get an otoplasty because i'm afraid the surgeon will pin one ear back farther than the other and make me look lopsided.

It : It is very rare for the ears to be noticeably lopsided after otoplasty. Most people (even those who haven't had surgery) don't have perfectly symmetric ears to begin with.

In the rare instance where a significant asymmetry becomes evident after otoplasty it is certainly possible to revise the result to make things more even.

Discuss your concerns and expectations with your surgeon to make sure you're comfortable before proceeding with surgery.

Yes: This is called an otoplasty and is a very common and relatively easy procedure to have done. In surgery we make a small incision behind your ear, and reshape and reposition the cartilage. There is a quick recovery and very little discomfort.

Unlikely: After 12 years, I think relapse is very unlikely. You may have residual discomfort if the ears are manipulated. If you think there is a problem, see a facial plastic surgeon or ENT Doc.
