Keep it clean.: Before, during and immediately after the procedures, keep the area clean and protected. Once healed, tattoos are unlikely to become infected. Piercings, on the other hand, should be protected from further trauma, and if become red and painful, may need additional care or removal to prevent the spread of infection.

Accepted Answer

Yes: Your doctor needs to write all observations and data when seeing you.  It helps in the diagnosis, risk factor stratification, and looking back at history. Don't worry though. No one besides you and your doctor is permitted to see the notes except those with legitimate need - consulting doctors, nurses, insurance, and government officials by court order.

if body piercing and tattoo infection is severe, does the patient need to have a surgery?

Accepted Answer

Infection: Not usually.  The infection should be cultured and appropriate antibiotics given.  If there is an abscess, it may need to be drained. If the organism is not killed by antibiotics the management plan would have to change.

i have leukemia but now in remission and i want to know if i can get and piercings or tattoos?

Accepted Answer

Depends on labs: Universal precautions (clean needles, etc) should be used independent of leukemia status. You could get tattoos/piercings otherwise if your labs were okay -- platelet  count normal (or >50k), WBC (particularly absolute neutrophil count = ANC normal). Check with your treating physician first of course.

Not necessarily: Most allergic reactions to piercings tend to be from the metal such as nickel or less commonly cobalt or gold.  Adverse or allergic reactions to tattoos tend to be related to the inks that contain aluminum, iron or mercury.

Different: I can't say from first hand experience. But I have some patients who have both piercings and tattoos. They said that they feel differently. The piercing was described as sharp pain but not repetitive like the many pricks used for a tattoo.

More painful: Pain will be for much longer time until tattoo is completed and pain will persist for hours with soreness for days.

Accepted Answer

It depends on the: Location of the piercing. Genitalia ; cartilage are more painful than other areas.

Accepted Answer

No: If you are immunosuppressed then you realize that you are more succeptible to getting an infection and not having the ability for your body to fight it adequately.  Placing foreign material or objects in your body sure isn't going to help.

could getting a piercing or tattoo release pheromones?

Accepted Answer

I doubt it: I don't think pheromones are induced by tattoos or piercings. If you did either and noticing an increase in persons finding you attractive then you probably made a good choice in your tattoo or piercing.
