Fracture: If you have an ankle fracture i would not do any physical therapy exercises until the cast or boot is removed and fracture healing is observed on x-ray.

Several.: Swimming. Aqua-aerobics. Weight training. Etc.  When fractures heal, wearing an ankle brace and using a schwinn-airdyne would be best! other sporting activities can be aqdapted, but check with your orthopedist!

Disuse atrophy: While he was in a cast his muscles weakened because of disuse. Physical therapy is an excellent idea for him to restore his muscles.

Orthopedic doctor: For ankle fracture, you really need to see an orthopedic physician to examine you and review xrays.  Only then can s/he assess the fracture and what treatments are needed -- in some cases this could be surgery.  In the meantime, stay off of it -- elevate, and use an ice wrap on the area (not ice directly on your skin).

In my opinion all --: Maisonneuve fx needs to be fixed, to stabilize the whole leg ; ankle complex, otherwise chronic problems occur, like instability of the joint, arthritis, pain.

Ankle fracture : If it's displaced you need surgery because the bone when formed will not align and your ankle will heal abnormally. If it's a non-displaced fracture you could be ok with a hard cast or boot brace and with time it will heal. But you need to see an orthopedic doctor to make this judgement call.

To fix or not to fix: In general, a displaced fracture in an ankle would benefit from having it repaired operatively--unless there are mitigating circumstances that would make that a poor choice.  The treating physician is the best person able to assess the entire patient, the fracture, and any other factors to arrive at the best treatment plan.

my left  shoulder has been hurting me on and off for about 2 years it has been x-rayed and they didn`t find no breaks or fractures when i fell but the pain is still there done physical therapy and cortazone shots with no relief. should i find another doct

Shoulder : At this time probably best to be evaluated by orthopedist or sports medicine physician. Plain film will not look at soft tissue and at this time some type of labrum tear or perhaps rotator cuff injury likely.

will i need physical therapy for three posterior rib fractures?

Accepted Answer

Not typically: In general, therapy in a patient with healing fractures of the ribs can be painful and not particularly helpful; other than in the initial mobilization to get a person out of bed.  Once the fractures are healed, most patients do well and so therapy not terribly useful at that time either.  Deep breathing and even using an incentive spirometer to avoid an associated pneumonia can be helpful.
