Clotting problem: Petechiae is worrisome for a deficiency of coloring cells. Though it could just be related to infection we worry it could be something more serious.

More info needed: Usually patients have fatigue, swelling of glands under neck, under arms, and in the inguinal area.  Often the liver or spleen are enlarged.  Unexplained fevers may also be a symptom.  If you are concerned, do no take any chances, have your physician give you a good check-up and check your blood counts.  Feel better!

Petechia: if u  have easy bruising or bleeding  get a cbc to check your platlets

It's nothing: to worry about. Scattered Petechia are just a result of trauma to very small blood vessels, capillaries. You can get them after sneezing,coughing,vomiting or if you have something constructive around the area like elastic or tourniquet.  Large numbers of petechiae are seen in a variety of illnesses along with other symptoms. Your ibuprofen may be contributing to your development of petechiae

at what point should the presence of petechia become alarming? i have 2 small splotches in my shoulder and i don't know how they got there.

If recurrent: There is a difference between petechia (tiny red dots) and purpura (brusing). Your description sounds more like bruises. Many people don't know how and/or when they got occasional bruises. If you have easy bruisability and it recurrs often, you should talk with your doctor so that blood tests can be done. If it is an occasional problem that occurs infrequently, there is nothing to worry about.

HIV: Petichiae occur due to either capillary fragility or to some defect in coagulation, usually platelet deficiency.  The latter may occur due to a wide number of mechanisms, many of which can be seen in either acute HIV disease (splenic enlargement or bone marrow disease), or due to any of the infections or malignancies that following profound immune deficiency due to hiv/aids.
