Lesions seen on plain scans can be shown to be biologically active of pet scan  this then suggests metastatic tumor and stages the disease.   If a lesion on plain scan does not "light up" on pet scan, it is assumed to be benign.

The gold standard for diagnosing colorectal cancer is screening colonoscopy at age 50, or earlier with a family history.
