diagnose metastasis: Pet scanning is used for staging of a variety of cancers. Lesions seen on plain scans can be shown to be biologically active of pet scan this then suggests metastatic tumor and stages the disease. If a lesion on plain scan does not "light up" on pet scan, it is assumed to be benign.

PET scans: Seek regions that consume a lot of "fuel" and the more uptake, the higher the suv. Colorectal cancer usually is measured by exam, endoscopy (+/- u/s), and ct imaging. Mr and pet are not clearly needed in most cases. One reason is cost (pet is very expensive) the other is lack of evidence that it is clearly better than the imaging i listed.
