See an Allergist to confirm sensitivity and treat with nasal sprays and antihistamines. Avoidance also key. If you have pets limit access to bedroom, HEPA filters, frequent washing. Allergy shots can also be helpful.

But not all children with asthma are allergic to pets.  Specific testing can be done by your pediatrician, or by an allergist.

: No.   If the dog have a sore throat and you kissed it you might have caught it. One can give/catch COVID and other viruses from dogs but sore throat not a common symptom in COVID. Allergy would more likely be sneezing, itchy eyes. Protect your pets by wearing a mask (you not the dog) when you are ill.

Sometimes: But not all the time. Nasal allergies are not a frequent cause of a really bad persistent cough. In a child with allergies and a really bad cough (assuming no fever) I would be concerned about a reactive airway/asthma type condition. If the child also had eczema I would be even more concerned.

Not Exactly: What is passed genetically from parent to child is the propensity to develop atopy (such as eczema, asthma, allergic rhinitis, food allergies) but usually not sensitization to specific allergens which the parent is allergic to.  The exception, which is a controversial topic, is drug allergies, but this is usually dependent on metabolism of the drug which is inherited rather than the allergy.

Lots of Options: Over-the-counter non-sedating antihistamines like Allergra, Claritin, and Zyrtec are helpful (I like Zyrtec the best). Other treatments include daily steroid nasal sprays and antihistamine eye drops. Avoidance of triggers is also helpful. If you have a cat or dog keeping it out of the bedroom is important, HEPA filters, washing cat weekly, frequent cleaning. Allergy shots can also be life-changing

Not very close: Pet allergens tend to be airborne so one does not have to be very close to the animal to have symptoms. In fact, the animal may be out of the house and one can still have symptoms.
